SIU gets another top 25 team at home tonight. St. Mary's is also (according to kenpom.com) ranked #1 in RPI.

As stated here many times prevoiusly I don't have a lot of confidence in my Saluki's and always expect the worst. That said, I see the righting of the ship a little in this game and the dawgs sneaking out a 3 point win at home 59-56.

I am sure I am going to be embarrassed, but I am going to go ahead and pick the Salukis again. Home court advantage has to help at some point, right? Surely the shooting cannot stay as cold as it is now. St. Mary's is certainly better than Charlotte, so this could very easily go very bad, but I do think the Salukis are going to get it straightened out at some point.

For us Drake fans this is a good measuring stick of where we are in the early season. I've tlaked with DU players and they are still PO'd about that game and feel they should have won. Also heard Keno say a day doesn't go by where he doesn't 2nd guess some of coaching in that game. He also said there was a kid who is jr. college transfer that never shot the three and he was lights out against us. We played them much closer than their 6 point win indicates at their place. I predict a tough game for the Salukis but a win, 66-63 .. :salukis:

This is the same St. Mary's team that Drake took to the wire at their place.

The Gaels also have beaten Oregon and Seton Hall soundly at their place. This is their first true road game of the year so that may play into SIU's favor.

Will the Dawg's come out with a purpose to make a statement or will this be a second straight non-con home loss for SIU? Could get ugly but with a quality Western Kentucky team and a very good Butler team still coming into Carbondale, this could be a long non-con home season for SIU fans.

Here's hoping that the Salukis have regrouped and have sharpened their fangs for this one. To date, this would be the biggest non-conference win for the Valley if they can get it done.:salukis::valley:

I can't remember the last time an SIU post had this many doubting SIU followers. Maybe after the Alaska debacle a couple of years ago? I don't think there is any doubt the JT and TY presence created more post opportunities for RF and MS.

Well, I am just happy with the effort tonight.

I have no idea what this team would do if we were to ever lose Mullins. He won this game for us, no question. Falker did not contribute much besides the boards. Shaw hit some shots in the middle of the game. Bone scored some at the beginning, but when it was crunch time, Mullins took over the game.

I guess Lowery talked to him about it. He was pretty aggressive tonight and gave SIU the outside/slashing threat it needs to open up other shots.

The other thing we did well was rebound. There was a lot of putbacks.

Also, got to give credit to the D. Even the young guys looked pretty good on D.

I was a little disappointed with Fay tonight. He seemed to take a step back.

But, good effort. I don't know if Saint Mary's is that good of team, but they were ranked and it was a good win. Hopefully we can continue this effort level. The defense was good and we got to a lot of loose balls and rebounds.

Lots of work to do, but in stretches, SIU was good in a lot of areas. Mullins had his best offensive game as a Saluki. Randal cannot make shots from anywhere right now, except, maybe, the fouline.

Big game at SLU on Saturday and a tricky quick trip to KZoo tuesday. 2 roadies in 4 days a comin'. SIU's schedule is tough throughout.

Dawgs played like they were sick tonight.....sick of losing. Vintage Saluki effort on defense, held them 20 or so below thier average and dawgs were decent offensively which is usually good enough.

We may have found our floor leader tonight. Still need to make improvements...Bone is better but made some poor passes in traffic. Green tonight was at least a mild threat on offense, hopefully he can continue that and improve a little more. Brandon Wood had some good minutes also. Haven't seen the stats but Shaw had a solid game too.

Don't know why they didn't play any zone......they did get the scouting report on taking the ball to the basket but they didn't have the kind of athletes to finish the play like USC, Indiana and Charlotte. SIU closed out on the shooters better tonight too, the effort was there defensively.

FWIW, Mullins did most of his scoring at the end of the game when he was not defending Mills. That kid was pretty quick, but after the first 5-6 possessions Mullins caught up with his speed and did a pretty good job on him the rest of the night.
