Of course, with the consistency UNI has played with, UE will beat us twice and we will sweep SIU, CU, and BU

No one can predict this thing right. All bets are OFF when MVC play starts. I remember a few years ago when Indiana State only lost like 1 non-conference game, beat Indiana, and proceeded to get destroyed in the MVC.
Despite saying that, I'm throwing up this craptastic jumble.

Damn! The IlSU fans are mighty high on themselves lately. First they are the flagship team of the valley this season and now they are jumping MSU, BU, and SIU for a trip to the NCAA tourney.
Just remember if you do make the NCAA tourney that the goal is to make the sweet 16, because thats the equivalent to a National Championship for you guys....remember to set the bar low.

The guy that said the Birds were the flagship team was out over his skis and was chastized appropriately. However, while we're on the subject, isn't a prediction of finishing Valley play ranked higher than Bradley setting the bar low enough?

I understand the rivalry, but I don't care. What is important is the well-being of this board and there has been an absence of good Valley Talk fodder. I don't care who the poster is, or what team they target, but somebody has to fill the void your brother left. Lately, it's like a wasteland on Valley Talk.

I disagree. You are the only one that not only remembers it, but continues to bring it up. I honestly have never seen it anywhere else. Besides, that was 3 AD's and 2 President's ago. Much has changed since then both at ISU and more importantly in the Valley and the fans do not agree with that line of thinking so I'm not sure how much merit that statement has.
When that statement was made, ISU was the flagship of the league when it was a 1 or maybe a 2-bid league. This is not that Valley.
Just my opinion.

Stallings is a great coach and I appreciate what he did while he was here but he has been kind of an A-hole towards ISU since he left. Everything is always negative. Also, even though he mentioned ISU, I think that comment was more directed at the Valley.

i haven't been taking a break, ive been swamped at work, its the holidays, and ive been sick you a-hole. what? SIU sucks right now, what's to talk about? its not like we are going to have a lengthy discussion as to why they are bad....everyone knows they couldn't hit water if they fell out of a boat. so what's to talk about? how to fix it? they haven't fixed finding an offense in 5 years, what makes you think they are going to start now? That sums up the conversation about SIU, and currently i don't have time to talk about other valley teams. and for the record if anyone cares, we are a 1 bid league...so there is my status on the rest of the valley.

3.) And even if #2 were to happen, winning one Valley title over the last 10 years does not constitute you as a "flagship" program.

Wow. I'm gone from the boards for one day, I come back and some of the old BU/ISU fire has started to ignite. I guess MVC play really must really be right around the corner eh?
I love it. In all fairness, I think the ISU/BU and ISU/SIU rivalries are going to heat back up this year. Both have lost some luster in the last couple years (particularly the ISU/SIU rivalry which used to be fiercely heated), but perhaps this is the season that brings back the venom in full force. I think it will, especially if all 3 of our teams are in the top 3-5 of the league, which is possible.

PS---We are not a flagship program in the MVC. Back in about '98/'99 you could maybe say that, but certainly not now.

Looking at your record for WSU, they would have to win all their home games and 3 on the road, or some combination like that. That would be nice. I don't think it is going to happen. If you had WSU beating CU you should change CU's record to 16-2 or 17-1.

Is this assuming Ruffin misses significant time? If Ruffin misses 2-4 weeks, I could see BU winning 10 games. If he doesn't, I see BU winning 12-13 league games. BU is more road tested than any team in the league, and will win road games in this league. I don't see them losing any games at home this year.

This is based on Ruffin missing 2-4 weeks, i.e. the 2nd half lineup from Saturday. Bradley is clearly a better team with DR in the lineup. I think regardless that Bradley will lose 1-2 games at home, and steal a few on the road.

It seems many people think their teams will waltz into the McLeod Center and leave with an easy win. Have people forgotten that UNI has one of the best wins in the Valley? Sure, we have two ugly losses (Iowa and South Dakota State) but let's be honest, every team in this conference (minus Drake and Creighton) have at least one ugly loss if not more.

In Barry's tenure we have only finished worse than 5th one time and since we joined the Valley we have only finished in the lower half 3 times...Bernsen 6th 1993, Bernsen 6th 1994, and Hinson 7th 2000. We have finished in the top 4 12 out of 17 years which tells me someone either thinks this is the worst Bears team since 1990 or the Valley is the best it's been since 1990.

Yes, Creightonfan, they are certainly poised to go 15-3 or better in the conference. And your prediction of WSU at 0-6 and 2-7 might be a little too high. Quality work there. Keep it up. I bet you're predicting CU to make it to its first Sweet 16 in Altman's tenure, aren't you?

........and why stop there? CU is the chosen school in our conference. They possess the secret weapon, as well as the ability and willingness to use it against anyone, anywhere, and at any time.
After they devastate the rest of the conference [and retrace the steps that they despise WSU for taking], I see them going on a March run. I just hope that they still have the ability and willingness to use their :nuke: on Gary Williams when they get to that E-8 appearance.

I'm looking forward to it. The game last year was a shootout between Anthony Tolliver, who was a perfect 11 for 11, and OE who hit an insane number of treys. Hopefully, we can keep OE from going red hot again.
Making predictions on Valley rankings based upon the non-con schedule seems like a recipe for disaster to me. Frankly, its too early to know much about most of the Valley teams since they are almost all extremely young or have new coaches. I'm taking a wait and see approach but am certainly excited for the start of conference play.

I know what you are trying to say, and I agree to a point. But, just because a school lost to a better quality opponent, it doesn't necessarily mean that said loser is any better than the team that beat up on lesser quality opponents.

That is true, but you could also look at common opponents.
Drake and Bradley have both played Iowa and Iowa State.
Drake played Iowa on the road, Bradley played them on a neutral court. Iowa was without their starting point guard (and leading returning scorer) against BU, they were at full strength against DU. BU won by 11, Drake won by 5.
Both played Iowa State at home....ISU was without their best player when they played at BU, they were at full strength when they played at DU. BU beat them by 9, DU beat them by 35...
But.....just like comparing opponents records doesn't mean jack, comparative scores don't mean anything either.
Drake fans aren't excited about who the Bulldogs have beaten....it's how they've beaten teams that has impressed us. While many other MVC teams have been struggling occasionally and even losing against inferior opponents, Drake has been blowing out the teams they should be beating easily.
None of this means anything come conference season; it's a whole new ballgame.

DU--We're still a ninth place team. Bradley...well they have red uniforms. That makes them better automatically. And their players have summer jobs. That's at least a two game advantage. So I agree with them. They've played a good schedule and they've lost. We've played a weak schedule and we've won. So therefore they're better than we are. Don't you see the logic? The animal rescue league has issued formal protests about using a dog as a mascot. Noted in the protest were the breeding practices that created a dog like a bulldog which has no use except to be ugly. You know these dogs can't even swim? They snore and have sleep apnia and they can't stand heat. So if you have a swimming pool and it's hot out...you've got a dead bulldog in the deep end. Drake is definity not better because we are cruel to ugly dogs.

That's my point. I'm keeping it realistic. Though I'm not sure our schedule was as weak as some say. Iowa is still a Big Ten team with athletes that any Valley coach would recruit. I still don't think Iowa State is that bad of a team. They've got some pretty good athletes...though Micky D is having problems keeping them happy. I think those two wins will look better at the end of the season. St. Mary's is no slouch. That was a six point loss. Mecha's right. We've beaten the teams we should have beaten and beaten them badly. Other Valley teams have lost to teams they should have beaten. So is it strength of team or strength of schedule?
The Dogs haven't convinced me yet. What I am convinced of is that we may have THE best shooting guard in the conference. Josh Young has tremendous range. Leonard Houston has a 20 foot game. Bucky Cox is a tough out for any big man who can't guard the three on in. This is why we play the games.
We're still a ninth place team until we prove otherwise.

It's a little of both IMHO, as well as discipline. DU hasnt let themselves have a slipup game, whereas most other MVC teams have. I will give DU credit for that. They have stayed focused each game.

The Redbirds are too inconsistent for me to think of them as a top 3 team. They've had stretches where they'll look like MVC champs, like when they blew Ball St away to end their last game. Then they'll have stretches where they'll look like a play-in team, like when they let Ball St pull about even with them in the second half of their last game. If that good Redbird team shows up most of the time they'll be top 3 for sure, but the fact that they're so wildly inconsistent even within one game makes me doubt that will happen.

I don't disagree with that...hence why I said "if the 'Birds play to their potential, then fighting for a top-3 spot is certainly possible..." But you are not wrong. At times we've looked brilliant, at other times we've looked awful. I hope a lot of that was due to Jankovich trying out a ton of different rotations and the players getting used to his system. We'll see on Saturday how much of the rust we've shaken off...
I have every confidence that we have the talent, depth, size, athleticism, etc. to be a factor in the Valley this year. Whether or not that ends up happening remains to be seen of course. But the pieces to the puzzle are definately there.

except what does the team learn from blowing out weak opponents?
A team getting thumped by a strong team, knows where it stands, knows what it needs to work on to get better, and knows how far it has to go to get better. Also, knowing that most valley teams aren't as strong as those SIU got thumped by, SIU now knows what it needs to do to compete against a higher level of competition. Will that translate into wins? We'll find out soon enough.
Would I rather take the win, sure, but losing to a strong team is a better learning experience than blowing out a cup cake. Am I happy about SIU's non. conf. record? no, am I happy about their strength of schedule, you bet. We'll see if the 2 balance each other out, and hope the silver lining is that SIU is the most prepared team going into Valley play, due the level of competition they've played. There is SOME good to be had with that, but I guess it depends on how you look at it: First of all, winning. A win is a win and that helps build confidence, not to mention winning is a hell of a lot more fun than losing  Secondly, blowing out a weaker team can give you a chance to play everybody and keep everybody fresh and maybe work on some other things that you might not otherwise be able to do.
I agree that you usually learn more (and if your a young team "grow up more") when playing a better/tougher team, but there are still a few good things that can come from playing a cupcake.

Confidence.
If losing to strong opponents is a good learning experience, then 2-9 Toledo with the #1 SOS should be the best prepared team in America.
I don't believe your non-conference schedule does much to prepare you for your conference season. The vast majority of your preparation happens in practice. If you never leave home or play all your games against teams much better or worse than you, then you have problems. Otherwise, it's all just building a postseason resume and/or fundraising.

Were I an SIU fan, I would worry that the weaknesses your strong schedule has pointed out to the world are weaknesses that are not easily strengthened. You can strengthen defense in a season. The thing that's very difficult to strengthen, however, is the ability to score. You can either shoot the ball or you can't. Regardless of how strong your defense is, it doesn't score many points and there's always a way to beat it. The scout on SIU has always been that if you're going to beat their defense, you're going to have to use its tightness against them by driving to the hoop. Then you're going to have to hit your foul shots and not lose composure. Strong schedule or not, Valley teams have lost to teams they should have beaten and they've lost to the teams that should have beaten them.
I saw Bradley play Iowa State and was not impressed with Bradley's play. Strong schedule or not.
The fact of the matter is, I don't know how good Drake is. But regardless of the competition, you still have to make the shots. Drake has done that consistently. Last year and in previous years, I couldn't say that. I also know that last year and in previous years we played most of the Valley leaders tough most times. So, does SIU come into the Knapp Center and beat us by 2 when we have four guys on the floor that can shoot? I like our chances this year.
But we're a ninth place team until we prove otherwise.

I understand your argument and I'm the first to admit that I have no idea exactly how good or not good Creighton is right now.
The problem with your argument is that the MVC teams with the toughest schedules didn't just lose to their "good" opponents. SIU got beat by SLU and Western Michigan, neither of which is going to be confused with a "good" team this season. Similarly, Bradley lost to UIC. Those bad losses seem to weaken your argument because SIU and Bradley can't just say, "every MVC team would have lost to the teams that we lost to."
While Creighton and Drake played easier schedules than SIU and Bradley, CU and DU didn't lose to anybody that they were supposed to beat.

Bradley doesn't really have any bad losses. UIC isn't great, but losing to a 7-4 team on the road isn't horrible. Their record is troubling, though. You could argue that no MVC team would beat Mich St, Butler, or Vandy, but I don't think you could argue that no MVC team would do better than 7-5 with BU's schedule.

Sorry, this was Bradley's conference to win until Ruffin went down, and my confidence in SIU is just gone. The only team that has the potential to shift a lot in the rankings is Drake, because I'm still wary that they could crash and burn at any moment.

You're right baller. I fully expect to lose our first game on Wednesday. But anytime we beat Wichita State is a good time. The great thing is that if WSU were 10 and 1, Shuckers would have all ready crowned themselves national champs. But don't let someone else have a little smack fun when they're winning.

Go ahead and live it up. Enjoy it. It's just funny how you were so much about 'karma' a short time ago. That's all.
The difference between Drake at 10-1 this year and WSU at 9-0 last year was that WSU was ranked in the Top 10 and beat, at the time, some quality opponents. It's pretty known that Drake hasn't played an exactly stellar schedule. Their only good opponent they played, they lost.
That said, 10-1 is still 10-1 and is a great start to a team that's supposed to finish 9th. I'm just trying to put it all in perspective. But, by all means, enjoy it.

It's pretty known that Drake hasn't played an exactly stellar schedule. Their only good opponent they played, they lost.
Again, it's not who Drake's beaten....it's how they've beaten opponents. Several of Drake's opponents have played other MVC schools....in every case, Drake handled them much more easily than the other MVC schools they played.
On the SIU board, there was some discussion of Drake's easy schedule....I'm going to "borrow" (steal?) a response from another SIU poster.
Sagarin has them ranked #20 and Pomeroy #23. Time will tell but it looks like they're pretty good.
If Drake's schedule was really that easy, these computer rankings wouldn't have them that high. The Bulldogs must have been doing something right.
I know they didn't look all that good in Wichita, but I can assure you that they can (and have) played much better than that this year.

Let's see, by your logic baller. Team A plays a week schedule and goes 10 and 1. But that schedule featured a Big Ten team and a Big 12 team. Team B plays a more "difficult" schedule and goes 7-5. Team A goes to Team B's house and beats Team B. Therefore Team A is weak. I think I'm starting to understand that logic.

Did I say DU was 'weak'? Show me where. I said DU's schedule wasn't exactly stellar. I think you can agree to this, at least I hope so.
I agree with many of the things DU said. Beating the weak opponents by a lot makes me think Drake is for real. Drake is a good team. I'm just looking for one solid win to justify it. A win at WSU is a really good step.. winning on the road and all.. but let's face it, WSU seriously is not that good. A win against SIU on Wednesday is a start.
You can only do what you have scheduled in front of you. Drake winning 10 of 11 is pretty impressive. That is all.

The MVC Title still runs through Carbondale until someone proves something else. Big game tonight at Drake..based on past experiences in Des Moines, this should be a Drake win. Much better SIU teams have gone in to Des Moines and lost.

It was proven in 2006.. which wasn't long ago.. and I'd say after 13 games so far, it doesn't look too good..
