UNI defeats powerhouse Wartburg tonight 99-48  Not much of a challenge, but Carlton Reed played in his first game after recovering from a broken foot, and logged 8 minutes and 8 points. He could really be an asset if he gets completely healthy. Sounds like some newcomers also played well, as O'Rear and Montgomery scored in double figures.

 what? we only scored 99 points? we only won by 51 (and yes, I know we played Wartburg)? you think Carlton Reed sucks? you hate UNI? Yeah, we all know that...but I just thought I'd put up a thread about a Valley team actually getting a WIN last night, since they were hard to come by. You need to get a life man, or a girlfriend....oh wait, I've met you and the latter might be hard to come by... :innocent:

Is UNI done with non-conference now?

Waerburg? Wasn't that Harry Potter's school?

Waerburg? Wasn't that Harry Potter's school?

Wartburg. It's a D-III school just north of Cedar Falls. Despite what some fans of a team that has played two non D-I schools (including a D-III from Wartburg's Conference) and 3 schools recently transitioning to D-I and who are NCAA Independents, :bulldogs:, this is a good game to schedule.

Why? Not because of caliber of competition, that much is understood. But,

1) It's a nearby school that would generate some local interest while students are gone following finals.
2) Our schools have had a good relationship and have shared athletic facilities recently-Wartburg used the West Gym for home games while constructing a new gym last year, UNI's football team regularly uses Wartburg's home field to prepare for road games on field turf.
3) An easy game at this point of the year allows some of those walk-ons a chance to play at a later point in the year than merely the exhibition games or a really early season blow-out.
4) It just so happened that this game also coincided with the return of a a player who has been injured all year (Carlton Reed), allowing him a chance to ease into game action before conference play. It was also the first game another transfer player was eligible for (Joe Green). I don't expect a lot from Green, but he gives us yet more depth in the front court.
5) It gives the team a chance to work on some things as well, like a full court press. Not exactly something we have been known for, but we employed it several times against Wartburg early. Maybe Coach Jake noticed that we were actually able to force turnovers from Iowa when we pressed, and wanted to see if we can use it a little more, might be nice to allow us to up the tempo and maybe get a few more transition baskets. That would be different.

Still a long way to go. We are still a very young team and if rotation schemes against Wartburg hold out (Montgomery starting, Viet and Brown seeing limited time and not looking to keep Reed from PT) we'll be looking at an 8 man-rotation with 5 of them as either Fr or So. We're going to be on and off all year, there will be games we win that we shouldn't and games we lose that we shouldn't. I think we will continually improve and maybe make some noise in February and March rather than a late fade as we have recently.

Not disagreeing with your point, but who are the 3 schools recently transitioning to D-1 that Drake has played? NC Central is the only one I see.

So when is ISU going to put their cross town rivals on the schedule?

We still beat Iowa at Iowa. Which is more than some puddy tats can say. That loss really hurts our conference RPI.

Okay. Let's all celebrate that signature win that is WARTBURG. What a great win for the conference and for INU. How can we ever thank the PuddyTats? I know, let's make it a rule that in every visiting locker room in the MVC, we put Meow Mix in the peanut bowls.

Funny, you're the only one proclaiming it a signature win. Guess you wouldn't notice one when it happens since merely to.500 is a novel concept for the Mallards.

Drake Basketball, party like its 1969, since they haven't accomplished squat since.

Since 1969, Drake has made it 2 Elite 8's. I'm not sure how many UNI has been to.

Fair enough, how have they done since the tournament expanded? UNI has only been D-I since 1982, we're only 1-4 in 4 appearances since moving up.

Unfortunately Iowa University of the Northern has done it on tax payer dollars. Drake is just a poor private school trying to make it with players who are students. Excuse us for being a drain. Wait. This is a blue state isn't it?

Validation for the Dogs at LAST! HOORAY! Keno Davis celebrated by buying a Slip 'n' Slide, but then was inconsolable when the directions said "Ages 4 and up... not recommended for anyone over 200 pounds." Sorry, Keno. But hey, you're 9-1 now.
