Okay, thought I'd get a thread going for this one. After all, there already is one for our next game.

UNI has won the last three games in Wichita, including the Benny J buzzer beater in 04-05 and UNI's first road victory over a ranked foe last year.
I haven't followed a lot of Wichita this year, but know they are without their PG (like UNI) and have not won an MVC game at home.

Panthers are coming off their first game in a long time where both offense and defense were clicking in the same game, looking to continue it and build towards February.

I think UNI's inside game continues to play big and the guards flow better with the modifications made in our offense for MSU. As long as WSU isn't another team to have season high three-point fest on us, I see UNI winning a lower-scoring game and pulling away at the end on free throws.

UNI 66
WSU 58

iSASO

UNI could win easily. So what if WSU hits a season high in three-pointers? That would only be about four total.

It would be easier to list the players not with an injury, but here goes a parital list:

PG - Matt Braeuer - concussion
PG - Gal Mekel - flu
PG - Bret Michael - torn quad

F - PJ Couisnard - shoulder injury (could not lift it above his head prior to SIU game)

I'm really hoping that you see the UNI team that played Sunday vs. Missouri State. If you do, the Panthers can win in Wichita. If you see the team that played and lost the 4 games prior...WSU gets their first home Valley win.

I went to last years game in Cedar Falls. We walked out to our car about 8:30 pm. It was 8 below.

Tonight Matt B is going to come off the bench. He's going to hit Coleman in the head with his folding chair and then return to his seat. It will be the play of the day.

There is no chance we win. We barely have enough players to prevent forfeiture much less field a competent squad. This is our year for bad luck. I'm hoping the trend of bad luck continues so we can get it out of our system and start fresh next year. It has been an unbelievable year...

But!

It's still a great day/decade to be a Shocker!

C'mon Cold, hold your head high. This is the most negative I've heard you in a long time, let me rephrase your post so it sounds a little more like the Cold we all know and love:

There is little chance we win. We barely have enough players to suit up a full squad, much less a competent squad. That won't stop our guys, they will give it their all and make all of Shocker Nation proud. I get chills just watching Matt Braeuer on the bench, he wants in so badly you, can see the desire in his eyes. Few players in the country would show the courage he has and fewer still, would have his desire to lace 'em up and make us proud. The rest of our squad is banged up, but heaven forbid, these are Shockers, so even with the odds stacked up against them, they will show up and play hard. And while few teams suffering from so many pitfalls would even have a chance, don't be surprised if the Shockers prevail, I won't! Most would say that this is our year for bad luck, I would differ, this is our year to challege ourselves, deep down. The challenges we face this year will make us much stronger next year . And while I'm hoping the trend of bad luck doesn't continue, even if it does, it will simply strengthen our mettle and make us much stronger next year. It has been an unbelievably tough year, but we are Shockers and shockers prevail, the Giant is about to awake!!!!

And while we have lost more than we have won and we are supposed to lose tonight......

It's still a great day/decade to be a Shocker!

A few observations from the game:

1.) We suck.. badly.
2.) UNI can't miss at the line.
3.) I've never seen a coach (Jacobsen) whine so much after getting the benefit of so many foul calls.
4.) Eric Coleman is still a thug.

We're back to minus two starters again. So much for taking advantage of our little home stand.

We will be lucky to win 4 Valley games all year. The only Valley team we've beaten comes into Koch Saturday night..

And finally, I told ya WSU at -2.5 was free money.

Just interesting timing and location of your 3rd/4th posts.. that's all. I can agree with your last sentence, although I don't think it's something just limited to WSU.

Back to the game. UNI fans, I don't mean to come off as a total dick. Veith is a sniper from downtown. I really can't understand why your record isn't any better. You have the whole inside-outside game down. I'm guessing all you're missing is the consistency. Beating WSU doesn't say much this year - even on the road - especially since you guys have done that like 3 or 4 teams in a row now.

I'm sorry I brought up the whole Coleman thing again. The guy's a good player and has obviously worked on his FT's (at least for this game.. ), but man he just needs to take it down a notch. Props to him for causing Cooz to pick up his 4th foul. A whaling flop into the lane untouched and he got the ref to ring up a foul. Very clever.

It's not an insult to the UNI program at all, just for me personally, that's how I think about him. Some people just have inherent personalities that can't be changed. I think this case is the perfect example.

Again, nice win.

Dang, now I'm worried about that Drake 140, UNI 0 prediction in the other thread.:fear:

Game played out as I thought, though I was worried with how Mekel started that he would be playing on adrenaline all game and carry the Shocks in some superhuman way. Gutty effort by that kid.

Sad to hear about Griskenas, our broadcast said it was a collision of knees off-ball after our player passed the ball. Hopefully he can get everything fixed.

Durley sounds like he could be a tough match-up for years. Why was he redshirted? I thought you were rather thin in the post last year.

I'll try to answer WSUBaller a little:

Yes, Coleman's a thug, but he's our thug:grin: He is a tough tough player, and I think he gets away with some stuff, gets called for other dumb stuff, etc. I have a problem with the fact that he sometimes takes plays off, especially on the defensive end if his offensive game isn't going. Sounded like he was into it tonight 6 assists to 2 turnovers, to go along with his scoring and boards. We'll miss him next year (I'm sure you won't) but you also saw that we have Eglseder and Koch able to step in and O'Rear is getting some good minutes as a freshman (we also have a pair of 6'10 guys for next year-1 is a redshirt, 1 will next year; and Koch's younger (bigger) brother)

I wonder if some of Jake's complaining had to do with the fact that there were 8 combined fouls called in the first half and 20+ in the second. Ah, MVC Officiating: Consistently Inconsistent.

The last comment about our outside shooting; that's what we have been waiting for all year. Viet started the season cold but has gone 10-14 (9-13 from 3) since he was put into the starting line-up. The surprise tonight was Koch going 2-2 from deep (he was 2-24 last year and 1-13 so far this year) while Josten (40%+ shooter) goes 0-4. We are a much different team when we can connect from outside because very few teams can defend our inside guys 1 on 1.

I can't think of a single player who has quit on Marshall. Arbry Butler quit on himself so he doesn't count.

Gal Mekel had a 103-degree temperature several hours before the game and was listed as OUT. However, he got dressed and dragged his sick butt out there and gave it all he had, playing 35 minutes and scoring 12 points. He had the best excuse imaginable to avoid playing, but he didn't.

The horses hitched to the wagon are pulling hard, there just aren't enough of them collectively strong enough to pull it over the hill.

Dawg_Tired, here's another "you decide" if the team has quit on Marshall:

During the Bradley game, Phil Thomasson was smacked in the face under his own basket and went to the floor (no whistle). Bradley got the ball and the other 9 players went down the floor. Bradley put up a rather quick shot and missed. A WSU player got the rebound and turned up the court. About that time Thomasson was waking up and saw what was happening. He stumbled to his feet and moved the 6 feet to put himself under the basket. He received a nice pass right into his hands and layed it up for a score.

If you don't care and hate the coach, why give that kind of effort?

He later crashed into the basket support and went to the locker room with a twisted ankle. He came back out and played the rest of the game.

Again, if you hate the coach, why bother playing with that grit and determination? It would be much easier to join the rest of the team in the Triage Unit.

Obviously we probably can't do anything to inform the guy in Omaha that he has mis-interpreted the situation in Wichita, but I guess it's safe to say that you no longer have a question on this issue?

I didn't say I beleived that they had given up, I said I heard it in Omaha. Effort is a key indicator.

Dawg_tired, in an earlier post the person you spoke with said something about guys shooting away as a sign of them giving up.

Marshall has given the green light to everyone except Ramon Clemente, to shoot any open shot. It even appears that in an earlier game, he took Wendell Preadom out for passing up a wide open three (Preadom is an awful shooter). It appears that Marshall's philosophy is that you don't get many open looks so you better shoot when one comes along.

We do have one freshman, JT Durley, who puts up some questionable shots, but I chalk that up to being a little over-confident.

This team definitely hasn't quit. I've seen more fight in them than in many of Turgeon's teams. In Saturday's game there is no way a Turgeon-led team would have mounted a 13-pt comeback (from down 21 to down 8).

I still stand by what I said earlier in this thread about him stirring up ca ca.

You never know who knows something and who knows nothing. Losing does things to your head. There have been years at Drake when players are pointing fingers at each other, rolling the eyes at the coach and not giving their best effort. Times when players stop playing as a team. I remember when Gary Garner was coach and Lewis Lloyds brother was point guard. I don't think Drake had scored 60 points in a game all year. Creighton comes to town with Benoit Benjamin and Daryl Lloyd goes completely off the play book and we be CU by7 about 30 and score over 100 in the last game of the season. We all scratched our heads and wondered where that was all year. IMO, Daryl said FI I'm going to play. I'm done.

I suspect that your question might have been legit, but I also recognize that you might be asking this as a way to stir something up. Either way, if your question has been answered, fine. If your goal was to stir the ca ca some more I will continue providing real-life evidence that may cause your stir-stick to be ripped from your hands and used to beat you about the head and shoulders.
And in all fairness, I will continue to look for cases that might indicate that Marshall has lost the team.

Come on. You've known me long enough that when I want to stir the ca ca, I stir the ca ca.

FWIW, I heard the same guy in Omaha that Dawg_Tired did.....the guy doing the talking is somewhat "in-the-know", although I don't think he's as in-the-know as he thinks he is.

Lets just recognize that actions on the floor speak louder than words from someone in Omaha.

I also understand that if you wanted to convince yourself that the team has quit on Marshall you could do it, and it would be far more entertaining that way. But maybe a person could be like Christopher Columbus and live in reality instead of distant conjecture.
