Yesterday's paper reminded me of the worst seven years of Drake basketball ever when the former coach, Can't Koachanaskie, was in the paper. With MSU getting drilled by E-ville...congrats Aces...I thought an interesting thread might be nominating the worst coach ever. Who gets your vote?

Howard Stacey....what other coach inherited a program that had made 3 consecutive Elite 8 appearances and turned them into a 7-19 team his first season?

Barry Hinson
I know it's popular for MSU fans to bash Hinson, but any coach with an above .500 record in his career shouldn't even be in the discussion for worst ever. Try going 0-36 in the MVC over a 2 year period, and you'll understand truly bad coaching.

None of you people are even close. And MSU fans, forgive me for being blunt, but Barry isn't even the worst coach of the season, let alone all time.
No, the trophy goes to - Indiana State's Ron Greene. Green inherited a .500 team from Dave (I'll have another) Schellhase, and proceeded to win fewer games in each of his four seasons, culminating in the famous "0 for 89" debacle in the 88-89 season. We were a mediocre team when he took over, and when he left, we were beyond pathetic!!! That takes not only a strong degree of effort, but also a true talent for picking players that couldn't compete on local high school teams!
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Ron Greene wins the award for futility in the MVC.

I'm not sure how Rudy Washington gets into this list. He was bad, but Kanaskie was record setting bad. I agree that Weaver at UNI was pretty awful, but didn't he have a good year or two? That guy from Creighton, was it Johnson? he was terrible. WSU had some guy with a pretty dismal record in the 90's.
I'm sure NOBODY can come close to Kanskie's 5 victories in two years and zero conference wins.

Mike Cohen was unflippingbelievably awful. 3 straight post season visits and plenty left in the cupboard and he destroys the entire PROGRAM in 3 short years. Not only that but had no control over the team either. Terrible time for Shocker Basketball and it set the program back at least an entire decade.

I believe that would be the 1996-97 and 1997-98 seasons.

The guy in post #5 set the Bulldogs' program back 3 decades....with a lot of help from a clueless administration.

That would be correct. I'm not trying to pile on Kanaskie here, but I just realized that Keno has as many MVC wins (9) in his first half season as KK had in his first 4 seasons.

Weaver also destroyed the academic implications of the basketball team. In fact, I believe if you look at graduation rates and other academic marks during his time in Cedar Falls, it will show that his time here put us at the bottom of the Valley in many aspects.

At least those guys tried to coach. Washington actively used Drake to further his own *political* goals, *and* he was incompetent to boot.

Ron Greene was VERY bad.
Van Winkle at SIU put SIU hoops in a place that it's never been. Those early-mid 80's at SIU were the only REALLY REALLY bad times in SIU hoops.
The ladder Herrin years, and other poorer times pale in comparison to Van Winkle's tenure.

Tates Locke also!

Tates was a Bobby Knight clone, but couldn't win....He did go 14-14 one season if I remember right. but his last season was 4-24, OUCH! He could chew an @ss out to. He and Waltman had a lot in common!
look at the kid on the bench....I'll bet he just got a Tates chewing! I think that's Edwards but not sure.

Taste Locke the coach before Waltman? He was a poor coach for sure. I'd say the worst I've seen are these guys:
Mark Bernsen
Kurtis Kanaskie
Scott Thompson (not much better than the comic would have been with the same name)
The guy that replaced Barone at Creighton was abysmal. Before Altman
Tom Richardson (this is my UCLA and locking the locker room)
Taste Locke.....he was really bad and looked like garbage to boot
Rudy "Lard @$$" Washington....always hiking his pants up
Stan Albeck....... responsible for: Dion Thurman, Xanthus Houston, Mike Cash and Trevor Hart.:lol:

I was going to nominate Mike Cohen but he did beat two ranked teams (Alabama and Okie State) in one week during his tenure.

Tom Abetemarco has got to be somewhere on the list.
To Du Bulldog. I was at Drake when the great Howard STACEY came along and I have to agree with you . He was the worst. They hired him when Denny Crum was available and interested in the DU job. You can add Abatamarco, Big Rudy and Kanaskie to the list. Over the last 35 yrs they have had some of the worst coaches in the country:bulldogs:

What's really sick, Drake has more of the worst coaches in its history than any of the others. What's sicker yet, I sat through most of those seasons.

Van Winkle i think coached SIU to its only ohfer in the mo valley conference. He cut off contact to every reporter except for mike reis because he was in van winkle's contract. I can only imagine those interviews, becuase reis was very critical of him, and if reis said "f it" and decided to drink at one of those games, I'm sure punches would have been thrown.
good times!

Without question the worst coach in Valley history has to be Joe Gottfried at SIU(now ad at S ALA and father of Mark, coach at Ala.) Joe took a preseason top 25 team in 1980 and went 15-12 and then the following year with Rod Camp at center lead the Salukis to an impressive 0--16 mark in the MVC(it was Joe not Allan)....as Keith Olberman would say "todays worst coach in the worrrrlllllldddd...."

I'll tell ya what, his boy at Alabama isn't too sharp with the X's and O's either. Real downer that Painter (a great X's and O's guy) didn't have Brooks and Hairston ready to play against Alabama until it was too late (one of Stetson's worst games in a Saluki uni). Bama beat SIU near the buzzer and SIU would of whipped on Stanford (one of the worst #1 seeds I can remember) and gotten to the sweet 16 in '04.

I'd like to learn more about this JD Barnett character, the guy who followed Nolan Richardson at Tulsa. It's possible that he could make someone's list.

Rick Johnson at CU was the abyss between the Barone and Altman years. Certainly the worst that I have first hand experience of.
This is my choice as well. I was a student during the Johnson tenure and it was horrible. At a basketball school, nobody even talked about basketball around campus. As a student, I got to take part in more of the half-time promotions than should have ever been allowed just because there weren't many other students in attendence.
To show Johnson's recruiting prowess, it needs to be pointed out that when Altman took over, there was only one player on the Creighton roster that could dunk a basketball! Only one! Johnson came very close to destroying the Creighton program all together as attendence hit an all time low and Creighton couldn't even qualify for playing in the conference tourney.

Thanks for the correction, i wasnt born until 81, and didnt care about SIU until around January of 99 when i decided to go there(i was an ilsu fan until then, i'm in therapy for it)...I remember Gottfried just squeaked by bill o'reilly for worst coach in the world
jdoolsiu
01-28-2008, 08:29 PM
Gottfried was terrible. You are right, but I think most people give credit to Van Winkle for sucking the life out of the program.
That time in Saluki sports was referred to me by an ole Saluki grad by quoting Spaceballs: "They gone from suck (gottfried) to blow (van winkle)!"
JD Barnett was a fine coach. Wasn't he coaching at VCU in '85 when they had that solid team? Maybe I"m on crack.
I know JD Barnett had some solid years.
