View Full Version : Officials?

I've mostly watched the Shockers, (though I try to watch other MVC games when I can) and admittedly part of that is what fuels the thinking and eventually this post.
I have seen some of the worst officiating this season. (Talking with a few fans of other teams, they've mostly said the same thing.) Not only against my team, but against others. Where people get knocked around, beat up, and such, yet they don't get called for fouls. But do something very minor elsewhere, and it's a foul. And not only that... it's very very inconsistent. It might be me, in that I try to see if all the fouls are fair, even if it's the other team, and this year, a whole lot of the foul calls are just random.
I do have to wonder how many of the injuries that have been had, could have been prevented, if a lot of the games weren't as much of a shoving match and most calls being mickey mouse calls. Sure, there are possibilities any time, but I do have to wonder how much the officiating has contributed to injuries in the valley this year. I know, most fans grumble about the officials, but part of the reason they are there is to make sure it's a fair and safe game.
So am I entirely off base, or is it just in Wichita (and the televised games I've seen), where the officials in the MVC seem to be bad?

I am pretty sure that it is just Wichita the officials are out to get.

You are a full of it as a Christmas turkey.
Complaining about the officials is lame and the trait of a loser, loser fans and a loser program.
If the Shox were 15-3 there would not be a peep out of the fan base about the refs.

Your beating a dead horse.
Every team thinks their getting the raw deal. I have seen some games of other teams on TV where there fans were complaining and I thought it was pretty good game by the refs.

I won't make excuses for the officiating in games involving WSU, and I know that this isn't the major topic of the thread.
I will say this...........I think that if the Valley wants to truly shed its reputation as a Mid-Major conference, it will have to upgrade its officiating (among other things).

You probably have seen worse officiating this year than in previous years. The MVC uses the best refs for the best teams. WSU has been up the past few years, so they've gotten the best refs. WSU is way down this year, so they're getting the bottom of the barrel.
As a Drake fan, the officiating I've seen has been better than previous years. They've missed calls, but overall I thought it was pretty fair. Maybe I'm just mellowing out in my old age , but I think part of the reason is Drake is winning and getting better refs.

I say bring some power back to the coaches and let them challenge a call or two per game. Should be easy enough to introduce. Maybe refs will get better so they don't look like fools on national TV.

How do you challenge a call or two? Basketball is so subjective. Was it a charge or a block? They already challenge 3- Point buckets and whether or not a shot beat the buzzer, what more can you challenge? From the games I've seen, the officials seem better than they were 3-4 years ago.

I agree. If you are going to challenge everything, then the game is going to end up taking 4 hours and no one wants that.
Part of the game is the human error. Without it, what are we fans going to yell about?

Evansville has had good refs for one Valley game--the most recent one. In the other games, bad officiating cost us a W.

Are you sure it was the bad officiating that lost you those games?

I want to weigh in on this so bad, but I know better than to have an SIU fan say anything about the refs. :innocent:

Refs do a certain number of games per week. Refs go where they are paid the most. When the MVC has games on Tuesdays there are not as many games across the country so we sometimes get some final 4 refs. Keep in mind its harder to get to some arenas than others. When the MVC plays on Saturdays we are up against a lot of games for refs to pick from. Simple as that. If you do play in the NIT, you are getting the bottom of the barrel because the NCAA tourney didn't want them.

Also, the referees the Valley uses don't JUST do the Valley games. They do CUSA, Big 10, Big 12, etc. as well. There aren't "Valley refs" that are exclusive to this conference. Some of them may work a majority of their games in the Valley, but the conference doesn't employ them.

You do realize for the most part, the Valley uses the same refs as the Big 12 and Big 10 though, right? Not for every game, but a good number of them.
This season, I have seen refs that have done Final 4's, Elite 8's etc. I am not saying these refs are great, but to do games that really matter (Final 4, etcs) those refs must be doing something right, since those refs are picked on merit.
For Saturday games, there is so much fighting among conferences for the best refs. That is one reason the Valley decided to move games to Tuesday and Wednesday nights, rather than Monday nights, so they wouldn't have to compete so much with the other conferences for refs on Monday nights. (I think Blueblood and troutangler said as much above)
I'd also like to add, when your team loses, there is a higher tendency to look at the refs, than if your team wins. There are good refs, bad refs, average refs, etc. Good teams can overcome poor officiating.

BINGO!
You hit the nail right on the head.
It is that nature of all fan bases to want to blame someone or something rather than admit that their team sucks.
It is much easier to blame the refs than the players or coaching staff.

I agree this was a nice conversation and I actually learned something. Sort of rare on here.

You guys have it all wrong. Evansville would be 9-0 with better officiating. I have data to prove it, but the file is too big to upload.
