I think it was a mixed reaction from where I was. I defiantly heard some cheers but I also heard some grumbles from some people. I think people are happy with Drake's success, but we are kind of tired of them winning every game in the Valley so far.

Thanks for info.

I was watching the game on Fox Sports Midwest and the Mitch H said the arena cheered when the score was announced and I just wanted to see if that was true or not.

I was under the impression that Drake and UNI had a pretty good rivalry going on, so I did find it a little hard to believe. Thus the post here.

There is no rivalry between Drake and UNI, Drake has won a couple of basketball games and all of a sudden we are a rivalry? We beat them in football every year by 50 and they are having a good "year" in basketball. When they have 5 18-22 win seasons in a row and go to 3 NCAA tournaments we will talk.

The reason for the cheers.

I am rooting for Drake to win every game the rest of the year except one. If we beat Drake and they win the rest of their games that means that we move up in the standings. Good for us, I could care less about Drake. When they announced the Drake win it also signified a InState loss, meaning that it took them out of the fourth place tie (now third place tie) equation.

I wouldn't say UNI has a really strong rivalry with anyone. Drake is obviously a game that we always want to win just because it's another Iowa team. I'd say SIU is another game people get excited about, but I think that's largely because our football rivalry is strong.

I think there is a friendly (with a competetive edge) rivalry between Drake and UNI in basketball. The fans bases do not hate each other by any means. But there were words exchanged between the fans in DSM a week or so ago. Some were ugly but most were in fun.

Yeah, our track team enjoys coming down there to take some of the medals you pass out. Would be really neat if the home team were able to capture some as well. Too bad that world class event can't get on TV since the Penn Relays end up broadcast every year. I mean that, Drake has much better facilities and, I think, generally better competition than at Penn. But, I guess the east coast wins out on that one.

Anyways, really looking forward to UNI being able to send multiple events down to the NCAA's in Des Moines this year, again. Would be nice if some of the other schools in the state would get some events in too.

As for rivalries, UNI doesn't really have any. I'd say SIU, but they look at other games as bigger, though we have had some real doozies over the last few years, it may grow as football continues to grow. Drake is more of just an in-state interest thing but no more of a 'heated' rivalry than any other conference game. We used to have a good rivalry going with MSU in both football and basketball (dating back to the AMCU days). Terry Allen reviving MSU football will bring that back to good form again, but it's hard to root against Barry Hinson, unless you're an MSU fan.:innocent:

Maybe you ought to check out UNI's record against Drake over the past several years. I'm always amazed at UNI fans who are convinced they are some kind of national powerhouse. Outside of Iowa nobody knows the difference between UNI and Northern Illinois, Northern Michigan or Southern Indiana. I'm sure Drake has been to 3 NCAA tournaments, but I really don't want to "talk."

You now that UNI is free to go to the Penn Relays if the competition is so much better there.

I am sure that Philadephia can't wait to have a school that usually goes to Des Moines and also calls its home the UNI-Dome of Cedar Falls....

The Cedar River is one of the great natural treasures in Iowa. It boasts great fishing and other recreational activities such as waterfoul hunting, mushrooming and nature walks. Furthermore, while fewer people partake in the rigorous activity, the Cedar River supports small boats. While not recomended, some adventurists conoe and even kayak in the Cedar River.

I suppose UNI and Drake are basketball rivals. Only because Drake suddenly got good this year after a mildly decent last year. But rivals over all?

They get all huffy if you mention football. Because then they all pretend to not care about Bulldog football. We all know this to be false after the Bulldog faithful was filled with hope after escaping Illinois State with their first meaningful football win in years. I mean their fans actually tried to talk smack to UNI. Of course, we all remember how UNI's third string wiped Drake Stadium's field with them.

Let's also not forget our nationally ranked wrestling and track teams. Yes, that track team is currently ranked in the top ten in Division I. In my personal opinion, I would rather be winning the medals than giving them out. Let's also not forget the domination of our volleyball team over Iowa for the past few decades. Obviously, UNI's athletics are overall highly superior, especially averaged out through the past several years.

This is the part Drake fans will throw out the insults at UNI's academic reputation, regardless of the fact that both schools are in the top 25 of US News and World Reports top Midwestern Universities rankings (Drake is higher at #4 with UNI at #16). But hey, not everyone wants to pay $15,000 more to get the same education.

Oh, and I can't forget the fact that UNI students are just pig farmers that couldn't get into Drake. Dear me, how could I forget that...

Jesus Christ this argument gets old.

I'm not going to argue with you on this, but will point out that I don't know anybody who gets fired up about Drake football.....and I know a lot of Drake fans. The people I talk to who go to Drake football games seem to have a good grasp of where Drake's team fits in the overall scheme. If you had Drake football fans talking smack to you than they are truly idiots. (I'd also like to see a link if there is one, so I can get a good laugh.)

Yeah, he looked pretty bad on the floor, but he seemed relatively fine afterwards.

I know this will come off as harsh, but it annoys me greatly when players will play with big injuries like that. I feel no sympathy whatsoever if they get injured even worse because they decided to put a game before their health.

You know, it's funny you mention that... last night's Super Bowl XLII was the 2nd most-watched television broadcast all-time, behind the M*A*S*H* series finale, and in front of the previous 2nd-place holder, the 2006 Drake Relays. When asked about it at the press conference, Eli Manning said "Wow... we beat the DRAKE RELAYS? That's really humbling."

2007 Drake Relays Attendance (all weekend): 38149
2008 Cliff Keen National Duals Attendance (all weekend): 15818 (held in See-der Fawls)
Super Bowl XLII Attendance: 71,101

Clearly there's no comparison. The Drake Relays is where everyone goes to be seen, last year's A-list roster featured:

I'm not quite familiar with UNI, but I can assure you the comments about Drake by the UNI fans are hollow, thoughtless babble. I'm a sophomore at Drake and I'm paying for all of my tuition through loans and working thirty hours a week with a full academic schedule. I haven't met too many rich snobs here. You pay for what you get (or want) I suppose.

Also:

-We don't care about your football team. I don't have one friend at Drake that even goes to our games or cares. We're non-scholarship and we don't give a **** about you or your dome.

-Drake's men's team is having wonderful success this year. We beat you twice last year and we'll probably beat you twice again this year. We had a ****ty past. But all that matters is we're a top 15 team in country RIGHT NOW and you're nowhere close.

-If you keep looking at other athletics as you numbskulls are: I believe the Drake women's basketball team is annually better than UNI as well as the Drake Men's tennis team. It's not too lopsided at all.

-When I think UNI, I think Jordan Eglseder's face.

-We live in Des Moines not Cedar Falls.

-And lastly, we go to Drake and not UNI.

Wow...just reading through this thread, the progression is amazing. It started off with the explanation of most UNI fans wanting Drake to do well when not playing UNI. A Panther fan then makes a stupd backhanded type statement about Drake, A Drake fan takes offense then Cranks it up notch and everything goes downhill from there.

The two schools generally get along. Both have had some form of successes in several areas. The Drake relays are great and a wonderful event to attend. I have never been to the national duels, but obviously its a big deal in the collegiate wrestling world. The two football teams can't be compared as they are on completely different types of programs. UNI has had more recent success in basketball, but Drake is better this year and has more of a history....and on, and on, and on.

Are you really trying to bring up Volleyball?

Seriously. Who won the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament this year and garnered the automatic bid to the NCAA's?

Yeah, we got beat in the first round. Its great that the NCAA regionalizes things so we get sent to one of the top 4 teams in the country first round because their close.

But trying to stack up Volleyball numbers against UNI is not a case you are going to win, what with numerous national rankings and trips deep into the NCAA's in our recent past.

Drake's having a great year in basketball.

I am sorry if I touched a nerve by mentioning that 'other' relays event that ends up on national TV. I guess the part where I commented on how Drake has a better facility (and it was better than Penn even before the remodeling) and generally better competition. Again, it must be great to host an event an pass out all the awards to everyone else who comes and not get any for yourself. Must be kind of like the University of Phoenix getting to host the Super Bowl.

WSU setter (Abby Harsh) had recurrent back problems during her junior and senior years; she was hurting in the MVC tourney and WSU lost to Illinois State. Are you suggesting that UNI was better than WSU in 2007? WSU won the Valley by three games!! I guess we could bring up the head-to-head records over the last four years; I think WSU has 7 wins over UNI and one season loss to UNI during this time.
Fri, Nov 16 Northern Iowa * - at Cedar Falls, Iowa 3 - 1 (W)

Of course, there is this:
Volleyball
Shocks named nation’s top defensive team...
The Wichita State volleyball team is the 2007 Overall Defensive Team of the Year according to Collegiate Volleyball Update. A strong digging team at 20.25 digs per game to rank 15th in the NCAA, the Shockers also added 2.43 blocks per game while holding opponents to .129 hitting on the season, the lowest of any team in the country.

As for the NCAA tourney, you think playing eighth-ranked Wisconsin is tougher than playing second-ranked Nebraska? UNI, which prides itself on getting blocks, got two (2) blocks against UW.

How about in 2008? WSU will have a freshman setter (Mary Elizabeth Hooper). Do you think UNI will finish ahead of WSU in MVC volleyball?

Woah, I see exactly where this UNI-Wichita State volleyball thing is going (due to experience) and it's no place good. It's a simple fact, WSU has been slightly better the past couple years, but UNI has consistently been the MVC's top volleyball program for the past 15 years. Let's leave it at that.

Second, I am partly mortified I actually agree completely with something Dawg tired said.

Guess you got to be that way when your parents are supporting your $20,000 a year education, while I pay for my own $12k education at a better institute learning real life values. Congrats on a good season...but show some class. Am I jealous? Yes...i'm jealous of my own sportsmanship and how much better it is than Drakes. ACt like you've been there because it probably will not happen again for another 30+ years.

End rant.

Just stop it. You make a fool of yourself on Panther Nation, basketball games, football games, and now here. Just... stop it. For the love of God, knock it off. And I pity those poor children you will try to teach.

I mostly agree with you here except WSU has three MVC season titles over the last four years; in basketball, SIU would claim this is significantly more rather than "slightly better." Let's look at MVC records over the last four years.
2004 UNI 13-5 WSU 17-1
2005 UNI 11-7 WSU 18-0
2006 UNI 16-2 WSU 15-3
2007 UNI 14-4 WSU 17-1
WSU was 67-5 and UNI was 54-18. Sounds better than "slightly."

However UNI does have a nice tradition in volleyball including Sweet 16 appearances in 1999, 2001 and 2002 and first round wins in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2003 and 2006. I hope UNI stays strong in volleyball and Illinois State, MSU, CU, etc. improve so the (volleyball) stature of the Valley improves. Over the last 10-15 years, UNI was the flagship volleyball school in the MVC; over the last four years, WSU has been the flagship volleyball school in the MVC.

Second, I am partly mortified I actually agree completely with something Dawg tired said.

UNI fans seem to be dumping on Drake. Somebody has to stand up for Drake ... besides the few Drake regulars like DT, McB, DU, etc. There is no reason for me to discuss UNI's record in various sports when DU and UNI fans ... do whatever Iowans do to be friends. (From the pictures, I don't want to know how people make up in Iowa.) :innocent:

Who was hotter, Thelma Lou or Juanita?

I always Liked Helen Crump, but that was Andy's squeeze.

I don't remember ever getting to see Juanita.....
