LARRY BIRD MVC PLAYER OF THE YEAR -- Adam Emmenecker, Drake
NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR -- P'Allen Stinnett, Creighton
FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR -- P'Allen Stinnett, Creighton
DEFENSIVE MVP -- Bryan Mullins, Southern Illinois
SIXTH-MAN OF THE YEAR -- Booker Woodfox, Creighton
PRAIRIE FARMS SCHOLAR-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR -- TBA (March 6)
MOST IMPROVED TEAM CAPTAIN -- TBA (March 5)
‘RAWLINGS’ MVC COACH OF THE YEAR -- TBA (March 6)

Emmenecker set the Drake single-season assist mark at 177, bettering the previous record of 174 set by Al Stewart last year. His 6.10 per game average led the Missouri Valley Conference. Perhaps the most improbable MVC Player of the Year (based on pre-season expectations) in league history, Emmenecker entered the season with 64 career assists and 57 total points in his three previous seasons at Drake, which featured 58 games and two starts. This year, the senior started every game for Drake and led the team in minutes. His single-season marks this year of 223 points, 129 rebounds and 177 assists all more than doubled his cumulative career totals.

Emmenecker has helped the Bulldogs to a 25-4 overall mark and 15-3 conference record as Drake earned the tournament's top seed for the first time in the league's 32-year tournament history. At one point this year, Drake had won a school-record 21-straight games.

Emmenecker is the first Drake player to earn the league's top honor since 1993, when Curt Smith was voted the league's Player of the Year. Only two other Drake players have earned the top honor in the MVC, which began honoring Players of the Year in 1969 (Jeff Halliburton-1971 and Lewis Lloyd-1980 and 1981).

The league's Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year is P'Allen Stinnett. In his first year at Creighton, the first-year player from Brewster (N.H.) Academy via Las Vegas (Nev.) led the Bluejays in scoring with a 12.2 points per game average. He was second in steals for Dana Altman's ballclub, with 48, and also added 3.4 rebounds per game. He's the second Bluejay to win Newcomer of the Year honors in the past three seasons (Nick Porter in 2006). Ryan Sears was the last Bluejay to win Freshman of the Year honors, doing so in 1998.

Bryan Mullins of Southern Illinois highlights the league's all-Defense unit, earning the league's Defensive Player of the Year honor. A Saluki has won the honor in four of the past five years. Mullins ranked second in the conference in steals per game while earning selection to the defensive squad for the third-straight season.

For the 12th-consecutive season, the league's head coaches selected a “Sixth Man Award” recipient, and this season’s honor goes to Creighton's Booker Woodfox. The honor is presented to the league's top reserve player (one who has started fewer than 25 percent of his team's games). Woodfox did not start any of Creighton's games, yet was one of the Bluejays' top scorers, averaging 9.1 points, and led the team with 46 treys.

Well, they were a game away from 6th and had the NOY/FOY and 6th man of the Year, so I am not sure I agree with that.

I am kind of surprised Stinnett got NOY over Theron Wilson. Oh well. Maybe that will motivate Wilson come Friday.

Congrats to him, although I'ma bit shocked, and think Young and Eldridge got screwed. They are twice the player Emmenecker is.

This ended up being a popularity contest and feel good story because he was a walk on and a sr. and NOT! about who was the best player in the conference in my opinion.

Young and Eldridge are much better players than emmenecker. They don't have the sappy walk on story, and they aren't seniors (which I assume the voters thought those 2 could win in it in future years), but they are better players from a talent stand point and a statisitcal stand point, and that's what this award is supposed to be about, it is named after Larry Bird for crying out loud.

I don't want to take anything away from Emmenecker, he's a good player, but I feel like Young and Eldridge royally got screwed. They were heads and shoulders above any other players in the valley this year.

Congrats to all recipients....even JT Durley, whose presence on the all-frosh team is extremely surprising......

In the understatement of the century, I will say......Nobody could have seen this coming before the season. Hell, we had a poll on Drakenation during the summer asking who people thought would be Drake's starting point guard. 4 different players received votes....Adam Emmenecker was not one of them. That's right, not a single person who voted on Drakenation thought Emmenecker would even start for Drake.

And now he's POY.

Congrats, Adam.

We sucked so I know that is part of it but Dale Lamberth should have been somewhere. Just in conference games he is 2nd in the Valley in scoring and 8th in rebounding. Again I know we weren't very good...just sayin

Biggest Snub.... Dale Lamberth. Find someone with better stats than Lamberth

Scroll down to the middle of the page and find someone with better stats... maybe eldridge.... maybe.

http://www.mvc.org/mbb/stats/CONFONLY.HTM

--------------------------------------------------------
I understand everyone had to put Drake players on there because they are the champions but c'mon... that doesn't just get them in regardless.

I'll pick on Shy Ely...Lamberth beat Ely in EVERY statistical category I could find except minutes played and a 1 rebound difference in defensive rebounding... more than made up by Dales offensive rebounds. EVERY STATISTICAL CATEGORY!

The next guy I would pick on is Deven Mitchell... Dale deserved it more than him. Next Guy is Crouch... first team!?!??? WHAT?!? Dale scored more and rebounded more. Dale also was among the leaders NATION WIDE in not turning the ball over... kenpom has him ranked something like 9th.

Congratulations to the honorees.

Not sure Coleman deserved second team, given his inconsistencies all year, but he's still a heck of a player when he's in the right mood.

Big question for Dawgie Style: Did you make this strong an argument for Patrick O'Bryant to be POY a couple years ago since he was clearly the best player in the league, at least by NBA-Draft Lottery standards? He was certainly a dominating prescence, but POY?

Emmenecker deserves the mention because of the all the things he does that don't show up in the stat sheets. He just flat out puts his team in poistion to win by what he does on the floor, and his team won more than any other. They beat Eldridge's team twice and they won without Young. Could they have won without Emmenecker?

just my opinoin, it isn't as much about emmenecker winning it, as Young (also a player from you beloved Drake) and Eldridge getting royally screwed.

I simply think this award was bout a feel good story and not about the best player this year. I think it's sad. The kid was rewarded because the media will love the story of a walk on becoming a POY and that he was a senior.

I'm sorry, my opinion is that Young and Eldridge got screwed over and that voters ignored what this award is really about, honoring the best PLAYER! not the best story.

What do you want me to say? You want me to lie and tell you I'm happy about the league's most important award going to a feel good story and not to one of the 2 players that actually dominated the league this year?

I saw every player in the valley this year, in person. It's not even a contest. Eldridge and Young were the 2 best players I saw all year.

its not the most valuable player award, its Player of the year award. Which in my mind means best talent, and player who played up to their potential (POB didn't do that, he was lazy sometimes). Young and Eldridge have a higher talent level than emmenecker, and they played up to their talent potential, which in a logical world means they are better players.

Let me put it another way, if you were going to draft players for a new MVC team, who would you select #1 based on this past season?

Next Guy is Crouch... first team!?!??? WHAT?!? Dale scored more and rebounded more.

Ummm, did you see Crouch's stats for the year. If you click on your link, he's the 3rd leading scorer in conference games only, 11th in assists (over 3 a game and he's not a pg), tied for 1st in free throw %, tied for 7th in steals, not to mention the most made 3's a game. Crouch definitely deserved 1st team.

Really? Which of those 3 players ranks highest in assists? Steals? FT%? FTs made? Rebounds (that's a trick question, Eldridge has more than Emmenecker who has more than Young)

Emmenecker ranks quite a bit better than both in a whole bunch of categories, he just doesn't rank highest in the one you want. Tough. Eldridge & Young didn't get hosed, they just didn't win the award because voters chose to look at a # of categories instead of just one. There is no criteria anywhere on this planet that says that they are wrong because they didn't base it on only points.

Considering I believe a PG to be the most important player on a team, I'd draft Emmenecker. Young & Eldridge are terrific scorers, but Drake did not suffer much drop-off when Josh was out, Leonard Houston picked up the slack just fine. I'd be glad to pick up Leonard in a later round, let others start w/a scorer and end up w/a nobody at PG and laugh all the way to the championship.

I know that these awards are influenced by how well a given player's team performs in the season, but it's not the MVP. Ely played on the last-place team and didn't have as good of a year as Lamberth did, so your logic doesn't make sense.

How did this happen......

March 4, 2008

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - For the fifth time in the last seven seasons, a Saluki men's basketball player has won the Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player-of-the-Year award.

The league announced Tuesday that junior guard Bryan Mullins has won the the distinction in 2008, following in the footsteps of Rolan Roberts (2002), Darren Brooks (2004, 2005) and Randal Falker (2007). Mullins ranks second in the league in steals with 2.1 per game.

Both Falker and Mullins were also named to the all-conference and all-defense teams. Falker was a first-team all-league pick for the second-straight year, after he led Southern in scoring (12.9 ppg) and rebounding (7.1 rpg). Mullins was a second-team all-conference selection and averaged 11.0 ppg and 5.1 apg.

Drake senior guard Adam Emmenecker was named the 2008 Larry Bird MVC Player of the Year. Emmenecker set the Drake single-season assist mark at 177, bettering the previous record of 174 set by Al Stewart last year. His 6.10 per game average led the Valley. The league's Freshman of the Year and Newcomer of the Year is P'Allen Stinnett. In his first year at Creighton,he led the Bluejays in scoring with a 12.2 points per game average. The "Sixth Man Award" recipient is Creighton's Booker Woodfox. Lamberth got royally screwed.

Dane Watts should have been honorable mention or something. We are toast without him inside this year.

Kinda funny that a guy who scored 42 in one game {first to do it in conference since 1999?} didn't get anything but Witter was quite inconsistent.

Falker making first team is a total joke. The preseason POY's total book of business this year was woefully lacking versus the hype. He played better at the end but not 1st team better.

Same basic argument for Coleman and his 2nd team pick.

These awards are always tough to vote on--guys get left out. I really don't like Adam E. for POY. He just isn't the best player in the league. Hes about the 23rd and 4th best on his team.

I would have voted for Young ahead of him---but I personally feel the best player in the league is Osiris Eldridge. He's tough.

As a BU fan I'm happy for Jeremy Crouch. He's had a real nice career and it's good to see a local kid get honored. Theron Wilson and Sammy M. were also deserving and I think P'Allen is the best Newcomer to the league. Bradley got the honorees they deserved, IMO.

Doesnt Watts suffer from the same kind of thing Matt Shaw does...inconsistancy......now, I may be wrong because I have not seen him play that much...but when he has played against SIU he has rarely been any kind of factor...again, I dont know, havent seen him much but seems like the same issues Shaw has. And I agree, the best player in the league right now is Osiris Eldridge...;.

I think Eldridge is a great player/scorer. But did he make others on his team better? He's tied for top scoring honors with Josh Young. He's number 10 in field goal percentage. He is not in the top 15 in free throw percentage. Adam is 10. He's 13 in rebounding, adam is 20. Adam is first in assists...Eldridge is not in the top 15. Adam is third in steals. Eldridge is 13 behind Young and Houston. Three point percentage, Young is first, cox is second and Eldridge is tenth. Offensive rebounds Emmenecker is tenth, Eldridge is not in the top 15. Three pointers made, young is second, OE is 3. Assists to turnovers, Emmenecker is sixth, Eldridge is not in the top 12. Defensive reboound, Eldridge is 10, Adam is not in the top ten. So, as I look at it, the only place Eldridge really shows up at the top of the conference is scoring. Past that, he's statistically good, but not great. You'd have a difficult time statistically giving him POY over Young.

Kinda funny that a guy who scored 42 in one game {first to do it in conference since 1999?} didn't get anything but Witter was quite inconsistent.

It was a great feat, but one game of scoring 42 in a game with a total of over 220 points doesn't equal post season honors. More consistency next year will likely elevate his stature.

Falker making first team is a total joke. The preseason POY's total book of business this year was woefully lacking versus the hype. He played better at the end but not 1st team better.

I totally agree.

He was expected to lead the Dawgs to the Final Four and that aint happening. He was a second-teamer at best.

I will agree that Falker was not justified on the First Team, as well. He was way to inconsistent. He can be dominate, but that is only when he shows up. There were far to many games when he disappeared for long stretches or got in foul trouble early.

Also, I have no problem with Emmenecker as POY, but does the POY have to be on the First Team also? If it were up to me I would take Falker and Emmenecker off the First Team and add Mitchell and Mullins instead - or Houston. That would be fine with me too.

Was it at least impressive for Emmenecker to royally screw Young and Eldridge?

He was doubled and tripled team all year when teams hit us with their zone defenses--no one could play SIU or Falker man-up the whole game--even Ben Jacobson realized that---and said as much at his post game news conference; for sure the Nevada Reno 7 footer that was torn a new one by Falker found out

I'll agree that Young is a stud. But you are wrong.

Take Young away from the Bulldogs and although it would HURT LIKE HELL....we still had some good shooters and we won 3 big games WITHOUT him. Take away OE and you still have a bunch of really good Redbird players. Young is not ready to LEAD the team. He WILL be ready for the next season and for the remainder of his stay here, which btw, is all too short.

Apparently college basketball coaches in the midwest would tend to disagree with you...

March 4, 2008

The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) announced today the NABC Division I All-District teams, recognizing the nation's best men's collegiate basketball student-athletes.

Saluki forward Randal Falker was one of four Missouri Valley Conference players named to one of the 15 all-district teams. Falker was joined on the District 11 Second Team by Illinois State's Osiris Eldridge and Bradley's Daniel Ruffin. Drake's Josh Young was a District 12 second-teamer.

Selected and voted on by member coaches of the NABC, these student-athletes represent the finest basketball players across America. The 150 student-athletes, from 15 districts, are now eligible for the State Farm Division I All-America teams to be announced on Saturday, April 5, at the 2008 NABC Convention in San Antonio.

District 11

First Team
Drew Neitzel Michigan State
Dominic James Marquette
Brian Butch Wisconsin
Raymar Morgan Michigan State
Dan Coleman Minnesota

We would be talking preseason top 25, with Emmencker, Young, and Cox. However, I have high hopes for Josh Parker next year, he shows both flashes of brilliance and youth. The nice thing is the youth part can be taken care of.

Anyone have a link to some evaluation or ratings?

As far as JP goes, I love the kid and believe that he can be a real asset next year. He does need to mature and learn how to control the offense better (too many times this year when he entered, the offense dropped way off). He has also shown the ability to shoot, which will help the big guys down low. I think Keno helped him out a lot by finding some playing time, even in the close games for him.

FWIW, last season, especially in MVC games, Drake's offense ground to a complete halt every time Emmenecker came in.

That is not intended to be a slam on Adam, but it's the way I remember things. I guess what I'm saying is don't judge Parker for next season based on what he did this year. We all know what Emmenecker did when given to run the team full time.

Parker is full speed all the time.....as he gets more experience, he'll learn when to throttle down and when to push it.

The Player of the Year award doesn't go necessarily to the best athlete and most talented athlete in the conference.

It goes 'typically' to a member of a team who was invaluable in helping that team attain a conference championship. Without AE, Drake likely doesn't win a conference championship. Period. Have a nice day.

Applies to you too.

If it was the MVP award they would have called it the freaking MVP...how hard is that to comprehend.

I don't know if he should have won it, I haven't seen everyone play this year, but to say that Dawgie (and 3 or 4 others so far who have agreed with him) is wrong because he doesn't think the POY=MVP is ludicrous. Show me where that is spelled out in the bylaws of the MVC. I bet if you took a poll on here you would not come up with 100% agreement that POY = MVP (I'm guessing it'd be somewhere around 60/40).

He stated his opinion, he explained his rational logicaly, and he backed it up. Yet everyone calls him an idiot. An idiot would have been a person who said, Emmenecker sucks he doesn't deserve the POY and left it at that. But in your world and several others on here, if someone simply doesn't agree with you even though its a well thought out position they are an idiot.

The mob mentality at its best. We can thank our current leaders for instilling this kind of "your either with us, or against us" kind of attitude.

I assure you, it's OK for someone to have a dissenting opinion. It's OK for someone to express that. It's OK for us to discuss it on here. It's OK to question who gets the damn award. It's OK to discuss what the criteria should be for the award.

It's not a freaking taboo subject and Emmenecker won't crumple in the corner and feel diminished because a bunch of valley fans are discussing the merits of the award and whether he was the best person to get it.

This site makes me sick on a daily basis anymore. I know Dawgie is a bit abrasive, but I can't stand that he and others are simply drug through the mud, called idiots, told to go away, etc, etc simply because they have a minority opinion. I'd maybe understand this if their positions weren't spelled out and explained why they feel that way, but they are.

If someone simply said 'player x sucks'...go ahead rip him a new one, but that rarely happens on here. Most of the time the opinion is stated and explained, but instead of actually discussing it, a select vocal minorities first response and only response is 'you're an idiot'. Wow way to make a meaningful contribution to the board. Hell if this is the way you people act in real life...what a wonderful contribution to society (no wonder we are going to hell in a hand basket).

Brave01,

Do you ever get tired of defending your brother to no end? Does this help pay him back for him helping you move? What a sweetheart.

It's not about defending him. It's about the general attitude of people on this board towards posters with a minority veiw point that they have explained (it doesn't matter if its Dawgie or not...thought I made that pretty clear).

And your "keep on a latchin'" remark is a perfect example, not to mention your entire reply. I'm not trying to single you out, this applies to anyone (though it was in response to your post, but that was just the last straw so to speak with the whole minority opinion thing). It just doesn't help your cause any that the exact thing I see wrong with the general attutude by a vocal set of people on this board is the exact same way you responded to me in. Condescending, Arrogant, Presumptive, and Antagonistic.

You couldn't actually respond or discuss what I posted, you just passed it on as defending Dawgie and having an obsession with you.

I can't help that Dawgie has a minority and opinion and also happens to be my bro. It doesn't change the fact that I think the tone of this board has changed to a mob mentality of only agreeing with the popular opinion and doing otherwise labels you an idiot. If that means I'm defending him, so be it, but its only a by product of getting sick and tired of seeing the moron and idiot tags thrown out for a dissenting opinion.

I'm dissenting ...I await the idiot response or giraffe poo poo response or the hanging on ballers balls response or the defending dawgie response. In true Baller fashion...predictable.

It's ok to go against the grain and offer up a nice, legitimate opinion. Some of things aren't even arguable, they're common fact, and he still finds ways to go up against the hill.

the question isn't that Emmenecker is the POY, obvioulsy, the voters think so...the questions is, should he have been, and were the precedents of past POY voting changed to focus on value to a team rather than raw skill displayed through out the season despite where their team finished in the standings.

POY stands for Player of the Year, not Precedent of the Year. As to the focus changing to team rather than player.

1997 Jason Daisy UNI (4th Place Team finish)
1998 Rico Hill Illinois State (1st Place)
1999 Marcus Wilso Evansville (1st Place)
2000 Nate Green Indiana State (1st Place)
2001 Tarise Bryson Illinoise State (2nd Place)
2002 Kyle Korver Creighton (2nd Place)
2003 Kyle Korver Creighton (2nd Place)
2004 Darren Brooks SIU (1st Place)
2005 Darren Brooks SIU (1st Place)
2006 Paul Miller WSU (1st Place)
2007 Jamaal Tatum SIU (1st Place)
2008 Adam Emmenecker Drake (1st Place)

8 out of the last 12 awards have gone to a player on the first place team. It isn't a new concept, but here are some stats you keep asking for. If not the the first place, of the other 4 years three went to the second place team.

As much as it isn't called MVP, it isn't called the raw skill displayed throughout the season award. Noone on this board debates that Emmenecker has the most raw skill. However, he did play to the highest level the most consistantly. If it went to pure raw skill displayed, Houston could have easily won it. However, precendent shows that it goes to the most consistant, most essential player, that happens to be on one of the best teams.

Rico Hill, Darren Brooks, Kyle Korver, and I say possibly, Jamal Tatum WERE the best players in the league the years they won it. All except Tatum, are no brainers in my opinion, they happened to be on the best teams.

I think I can honestly answer that for him and say yes. I know he likes to play devil's advocate on here, but he does truly love the valley. The problem he gets into is he tries to look at issues that involve valley teams from an "outsider" perspective or in his words he tries to not be a "homer" about his opinions about the valley and its teams. He tries to be unbiased (though he's not....I think thats impossible for anyone) and that comes off as him not "liking" the valley or its teams.

I'm sure he'll correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure he'll be cheering Drake on for as long as they are in the tourney.

I can't read through all of this nonsense to see if this has already been answered, but is their a definition or set of criteria for choosing the MVC Player of the Year? If not, I don't see how anybody can debate it. The Player of the Year is then toally subjective. Emenecker probably is the best STORY in the Valley, and that along with play that many coaches seem to think is the most important part of Drake's success would certainly qualify him for the honor.
