Thought we could list all the St Louis hangouts in one thread.
I'm also looking for a little help. For each of the last several years, I've meant to ask St Louis residents prior to leaving the big O for places that serve breakfast in downtown STL, hopefully in the area by the Arch (that's where I'm staying ). The hotel buffets are ridiculously overpriced, so I'm looking for bagel shops, greasy spoons, coffee shops that serve food, etc. Any help is greatly appreciated....

Did you say greasy spoon? Welcome to the Courtesy Diner (http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-17711625R-courtesy_diner-i). I highly recommend the slinger: hash browns, topped by hamburger patties, topped by chili, topped by eggs.

Bottom of the alphabet, and a bit difficult to find, but Zia's is excellent Italian food.
It's over in.....well......Little Italy.....the reason it's so difficult to find is that it's 2-3 blocks off the beaten path, across the Kingshighway Bridge (which incidentally isn't shown on the map provided by JBS).

It's Charlie Gitto's, and I ate there back in December. Best Ravioli I've ever had. Very reasonable too. My family will be heading there on Saturday night.
If you're looking for breakfast food, there's a Panera (it's actually called St. Louis Bread company in St. Louis) downtown on olive or locust I think.

I know that we like some of the places in Soulard (Joanie's Pizza and McGurks)and we always make a trip out to the Hacienda on Manchester in Rock Hill. Best Mexican food I've ever had! They make their own fresh chips and salsa daily, good margaritas and I love the "create your own meal" option.

There is no doubt that Zia's is one of the finest restaurants in the entire metro area. If I get a chance, I will be dining there.

One additional note regarding Zia's (and the other Italian restaurants mentioned too):
If you ask a local for directions to "Little Italy", they'll respond with a blank stare. The neighborhood in question is referred to simply as "The Hill".
I'm partial to Cunetto's myself, but they're all good.

It's a matter of preference, but Zia's is tough to beat. The Steak Rosemary is the real deal and I can assure you our posse will eat there at least one night. Cunettos is good too. Just a matter of what trips your trigger.
The area is definitely known as 'The Hill'. If you mention 'Little Italy' they will look at you like you had 3 too many $8 beers at Scottrade.
Hodak's is really good to hit between the quarter final games on Friday. It is some damn good chicken.
Final tip- find out where McBull is eating and head the opposite direction. Hookers and the local heat are never far away from him. :original:

Here's one suggestion for anyone going down to the Landing. DO NOT eat at Jake's Steaks. I had the worst steak I've had in my entire life there a couple years ago. Just terrible.
Show me's isn't bad on the landing if you're looking for a place down there, although it is just bar food.

On the Hill: Adriana's on Shaw just west of Kingshighway (pasta, pizza, great sandwiches), Zia's on Hill is great. Cunetto's (busy at times with long waits), Guido's (just across from Adriana's (great Tapas & Italian food). There are 4 upscale places (expensive.great food on Hill as well).
Kitchen "K" on Washington is good. Breakfast: in Soulard...Soulard Coffee Garden is great. Duff's in Central West End (CWE) is great anytime but Sunday brunch is great (ask for Karen..owner for reservations), La Dolce Via..campy place for lunch/brunch in "Grove" neighborhood...just north of Manchester on Taylor; Lemongrass on "Grand" South Grand (a few blocks south of I-44 on Grand is great Vietnamese); Sweetie Pies (soul food) on Manchester (north of Kingshighway) is great for cafeteria style food; Blueberry Hill in University city Loop for burgers (very famous place); Biggies on Watson (south of I-44) pizza; Charlie Gitto's downtown great pasta..not real bad prices; many new places along Washington Avenue (ask at your hotel); Soulard Area south of downtown off Broadway (Molly's pizza, Soulard Coffee garden, Norton's, plus several more); Lafayette Square Squires...upscale but good, one of the best places in town....1111 Mississippi (just south of Scotrade in the Lafayette Square area..."dressy casual" ..great food, great lunch time prices & dinner isn't real expensive;
Hope this helps....not a lot downtown except along Washington Avenue.
Our entertainment areas: Central West End, Soulard, Lafayette Square & the Loop in University City .

Those are outstanding recommendations. Avoid the TGI Friday's and the other chains and check out the local places.
I'd also recommend the new-ish J. Buck's restaurant just east of the Scottrade, in a renovated warehouse by Busch Stadium.
Also, take a walk down Washington Avenue, a few blocks to the north of the Scottrade. Several great new establishments have opened up there in recent years including Flamingo Bowl, a cool bar/bowling alley just east of Tucker on Washington. Flannery's, near 14th and Washington, is a good sports bar if you want to catch some of the other Valley games when your team is not playing (or the epic SLU-Duquesne matchup on Saturday :))
There's also the Tap Room on Locust north of Union Station and a cluster of good places in that area including the Tin Can Tavern - great food! - and Jim Edmonds' new restaurant, F15teen. Edmonds' place has a dress code, so you'll want to change clothes before going there. It's worth it though.
And you can't go wrong in Soulard, Lafayette Square or the Central West End - three of my favorite places in St. Louis.

I went to the Brewery at the Landing on Friday night and while the food was good, I felt the service was very poor. Don't know if it was because it was so busy, but we almost had to go find a waiter to take our order.....:ranting:
You would think they would have had a larger staff for such a busy weekend, but maybe it was busier than they expected....

Unfortunately, expect the same level of service next year as well. You'd think they would know better, yet the service always sucks during the tourney...

we went to Morgan's on Saturday about 5 PM, had very good service. The minute you put a beer down, she was there to get you another one, and the food was great, as always. Of course, it wasn't as busy then, and games were going on at that point.
