Missouri State has fired coach Barry Hinson, a source close to the situation told ESPN's Doug Gottlieb.

Hinson, the second-longest tenured coach in the Missouri Valley Conference, had led the Bears to a pair of 20-win seasons and had eight winning seasons in nine years at Missouri State. Under Hinson, the Bears reached the MVC tournament finals three times and made the NIT three times, including last season when Missouri State reached the NIT quarterfinals. But the team hasn't made the NCAA Tournament since 1999.

Missouri State was beaten 63-58 by Illinois State in the MVC quarterfinals on Friday. Hinson, whose Bears were left out of the dance with an RPI of 21 last year, has won 22 games or more three times.

Hinson's Bears have the highest Academic Progress Rates in the MVC and he has seen 46 of his 48 players graduate during his 11 years as a Division I coach. He has averaged 19 wins per year in his nine years in Springfield, Mo., but having never made the NCAA Tournament.

And with the palatial John Q. Hammonds Arena set to open next season, Missouri State has decided to buy out his contract for $150,000. A press conference is set for Monday.

Nope, his 2 year extension after last year set us up to buy him out cheaply.

1000 fans per game drop in attendance over his 9 years here compared to the previous 11 years (141 home games, 141,000 fans) you do the math. Well, you are a Shox fan, so let me help. At an average ticket price of $10 a ticket that's 1.41 million dollars.

Lets see if the fans in Carbondale, Omaha or Wichita would be happy with 9 years of no NCAA's consistently declining attendance and a coach who covers up player issues, and trashes his fan base every time he gets a chance outside of town.

Should the new coach not extend the scholarships of the two players who were involved in the robbery but were never charged?

I'm sure Cooks will be back, Cline on the other hand, I expect to disappear.

Should the new coach not extend the scholarships of the two players who were involved in the robbery but were never charged? One (Lamont Austin) is already gone (didn't show up to classes), one (Chris Cooks) will be back for his senior yr., and Cline was charged and probably won't be back (my guess).

The Austin thing points out one of Bs biggest failures....there's a long list of recruits that never made it to their senior yr. (or class at all) that don't show up on graduation rate.

Bears fans. You wanted a guy out that won 19 games a year, This time you'll get what you deserve. Someone like Kurt Kanaskie.

Here's hoping the Bears fall to the bottom of the Valley for firing a great guy that won 19 games a year. I hope you make a Sam Weaver, Kurt Kanaskie, Steve Merfeld type hire...

I am tired of arguing with fans from other programs but do you realize 19 wins doesn't really mean that much anymore. IL State has 24 wins right now and they probably weren't a lock for the NCAA tournament until their win today...their fans are probably still a little nervous. Also, how impressive is 19-15? Barry has 3 - 20+ win season in 9 years and he also has 4 of our 6 lowest finishes in the Valley ever - 7th, 5th, 5th, and 7th. His inconsistency is the problem and one of the reasons we made the change. Time to move on and I will not post another comment on this board about Barry.

As mentioned in a different thread, I think Hinson will do just fine in the MAC, MidCon, Conf USA or Sun Belt. He's walking away with a $150K check and his head held high. It was time for a change at the top there, 0 NCAA berths is a long time coming for a team that was getting used to the dance on a regular basis before Barry. Clean start for all parties involved. I'm just looking forward to the Bears coming up to Hancock stadium for a revenge football a-whipping this this year.

Either you've been in a coma for the last five months, or you don't remember the final standings. Picked for third in the preseason, finished in a tie for seventh. They've already fallen.

The last few recruiting classes have been horrible. The Bears will race for the cellar in 08-09. Feel free to gloat about that for the next year or so.

You're Missouri State. Not Ohio State. Not Michigan State. You're Missouri State. You're in Springfield Missouri. Not exactly a garden spot for basketball. You won't be consistently in the NCAA...ever.

Who said we needed to be consistently in the NCAA? We went 2 times the first 9 years in the Valley which was fine and have gone 0 times in Barry's 9 years which isn't fine. Also, tell that to Creighton or SIU...even UNI has gone 3 times in recent history...they aren't Ohio State, Michigan State, UConn, or any other BCS team either.

If we were Ohio State or Michigan State 19 wins might be pretty decent, and probably get you in the tournament, BUT as a mid-major it doesn't do jack. Case in point is Western Kentucky who is 24-6 but shown as the "last 4 out" on bracketology. Show me a list of mid-majors that got at large berths over the last 10 years with 19 wins. When you play 33-35 games per year 19 wins doesn't mean anything...we won 17 this year but finished 7th in the Valley.

I don't like to see an association end like this. MSU's program has been one of the most consistent in the Valley under Barry's direction.

Nobody should blame him for MSU's snubs by the tourney selection committee. Like every other Valley coach, he and the MSU program did everything it took - with the exception of winning the conference tourney and eliminating ALL doubt - to position themselves for NCAA tourney selection. I don't see MSU's snub as a failure by Barry.......I see it as a failure by the NCAA to reduce or eliminate the subjectivity that goes into picking teams to dance.

But on the other hand, I understand the MSU administration's position. After 9 years, he's had more than enough time and talent to there. It's time for a change.

Good luck with your selection process, Bears fans / students / administrators.

Technically, wasn't the longest serving coach in the Valley, with the title now going to Jim Les. If I'm not mistaken, leaving your own school, being announced as HC of another school, and then deciding to leave later, should constitute a break in employment. I wouldn't think Arkansas would bring a guy in for a press conference that was still employed by CU...would they?

Therefore, wouldn't Jim Les be the new Dean of Valley coaches, as soon as Barry Hinson is officially let go (and contract officially terminated)?

The fact that opposing teams fans wanted Barry to stay shows you what you need to know. You think Bears fans were excited to see Altman come back? Of course not...

MSU is doing well to now listen to the opposing fans tell us how small time we are, and continue to accept mediocrity. Of course opposing teams want us to continue to accept what we have.

To the poster that said something about our city, Springfield has solid basketball, but generally we recruit our region of the Midwest...like most teams do. It's also a college town, and not exactly a town of 1,000 people w/o anything to do.

It's official, the university held a press conference at 4 CDT. I've heard Barry will host his own tomorrow. The unviersity wants a new coach in place by the end of the month.

.......I don't really care what Burwell thinks on this one. I bet if Majerus missed the NCAAs for 9 years, he won't be defending him.

Then again, SLU may not be dumb enough to wait the entire 9 years before figuring out the program is stuck in mediocrity....

Burwell is an agenda writer. If there is controversy or a way to stir up trouble, he'll do so.

Barry knew he was out after the WSU game, and knew he failed to live up to expectations.

Again, the fact opposing teams wanted him to stay shows you all you need to know.
