Financial package being raised to 350 K by the 08-09 season. Private $$$ finally stepping up to the plate, albeit a little late.

Dude has to wait three years to get a $200K raise? Doesn't sound like UNI is doing all they can to keep this guy around. I hope they are not simply resting on the fact that he is an alum and is from Iowa and comfortable. Because, sooner or later the right job will come along and it will pay him about 7 times what he is currently making. Dude makes two NCAA's in a row, probably three and this is the best they can do for him? Come on!!!

UNI's main Major is Education. It is a great school for that but teachers don't make any money. We don't have a Med. School or a law school to produce wealthy alumni. Private money can be hard to come by.
This is a great step for Panther basketball. Hopefully this will be enough to keep him around for a little while.

UNI also has to support a football program, so not every private donation can be thrown at the basketball coach.

Yo, Big Mac is already pulling 325k for total package comp. Your source must be off.

You boys might be on to something here, UNI has some difficulties in the fundraising arena. This article shows that U of Dubuque raises more cash. It may not be totally on point but this article is interesting in regards to raising donations for schools in Iowa.
I hope he sticks around, he's good for the old Val.

None of the state universities outside of UIUC in Illinois raise much money either. We're set to raise $17 million a year for the next 3 years, that's more than what UNI is doing, but we're a major research university with a large number of research heavy programs, a school of medicine, and a law school. We should be raising much more than that.
Our endowment should be a large amount more than the $100 million it is right now, I think we're moving in the right direction, but for too many years we just sucked off the state's teat, and it didn't really help SIU out that much. I think our capacity to increase the salaries of people like Chris Lowery and Jerry Kill will increase in the future, but we're really 30 years behind where we should be in our fundraising.

It would be nice to pay Mac what he's worth. Right now that's not feasible, so they're doing what they can to keep him. Not ideal, but it's the best we can do.....unless you all want to chip in- we raised that Valleytalk money pretty fast....:D
$350,000 is not enough to keep McDermott from almost any school in the Big 6 conferences or a handle full of other major programs. Cal get $1.5 million at Memphis, Crean gets $1.3 million at Marquette, even the UAB coach is earning around $800,000. Its nice that UNI wants to reward their coach, but higher pay will still be a significant factor in another programs favor.

I know nothing about it, I'm not at all close to any of the programs involved, but my gut tells me that if Indiana calls Alford, he's gone, and that if Iowa calls McDermott, he's gone. I think Mac can recruit (duh), works the sideline very well, and he'll be an Iowa guy (in other words, I see it as a last stop.)
