View Full Version : The Abyss

Time to talk about who ends up in the unending, bottomless pit this year.

As best I recall this has been a summertime tradition started by Ricky Del Rio when he predicted SIU was on their way to the abyss in year 2 of SIU's run of 6 consecutive NCAA appearances.

Karma bites. Since Ricky started the abyss idea, WSU has had a fall from NCAA lock to NIT loss on a length of the court pass and shot with under a second left in the game, a fall from a #8 national ranking to finishing #6 in the Valley, and a 2-year plummet from S16 to #9 in the Valley.

With that track record I've got to go with MSU seeking The Abyss this year. They fired one of the most successful coaches in the history of the Valley after setting him up for failure for 2 consecutive years. Hinson's future at MSU was so messed up he had no chance to recruit, which left MSU no choice but to fire Hinson.

Karma bites. MSU into The Abyss!

Sorry, you can't nominate WSU. We're already there.

According to the consensus opinion of every fanbase, every team in the conference will finish in the top half of the standings. Through some oddity of probabilities math, about half of them are wrong every year.

It is very difficult to get anyone to say "We will finish last."

One thing is true, according to some on this board. Anyone in the conference can help raise the conference to new heights at any time. It certainly doesn't have to be WSU and Bradley, like in 2006 with the four bid season. Pure coincidence there. It most certainly can be Drake and...um...um...you know, the other three teams which made the NCAA Tournament in 2008. And those two in 2008 who beat BCS teams to advance to the Sweet 16. Yes, 2008, those were the days.

Got three teams in in 99 and had a team reach the sweet 16 by beating two BCS schools [Big 10/SEC] and then played #1 Duke tough before losing as opposed to getting beat by the Colonial conference; don't recall WSU being in that mix in 99.

Could it be that WSU is just 1 of 10 schools in the Valley and that the world doesn't revolve around them; that despite the fact they are 1 of only 2 schools in the present Valley structure that hasn't made multiple NCAA Tourney appearences in the last 20 years , that the Valley rose to the number 7 conference not because of them, but in spite of them and the drag they've applied from the bottom of the heap most years.

Ah yes, the last 20 years, the WSU era in MVC basketball. Those really were the days.

Yeah, IMHO he's new to Valley standards, just like Marshall was last year. I'll give him a pass, just as I did Marshall.

DJA, just because the AD said it doesn't mean he speaks for the entire Shocker nation.

There are quicker and easier ways to gratify yourself, without trying to bring it out to VT. Take some advice from Venditte, I have heard that he's an expert with either hand.

Sad in what way? Are you looking for short-term? long-term?

Or is it just that you want to spin your version of history to fit your own needs?

Help me out here......while WSU was 0-for-the-'90's, how many appearances in the Dance did MSU make? We're all aware of 1999, but what year (s)besides that?

BeeLine
07-04-2008, 04:50 PM
Outpost please , you're smarter than that. Who started this garbage by suggesting that WSU's sweet 16 appearence was more meaningful than what other programs had accomplished including very similar sweet 16 runs, and playing much more consistent basketball over a two decade period. Then honestly answer this , since Missouri State entered the Valley, which is the only level playing field comparison that would seem relevant, which of the two programs has consistently been the better. I'll remind you that in that 18 year period:

MSU has made 2 NCAA appearences[ 92/99 ] in that time, WSU 1[06]
MSU leads the head to head series and has won 4 of the last 5
MSU has finished ahead of WSU in MVC standings in something like 13 or 14 of the 18 years.
MSU has a sweet 16 appearence , WSU has one as well.
WSU has 1 MVC title, no MVC tourney titles; MSU has no MVC titles, 1 MVC tourney title.

MSU actually made 3 appearences in the NCAA in the 90's, but 1[ 90] was from another conference and not relevant to the MVC only comparison. That 90 season was the 4th straight appearence and part of a 5 for 6 run in NCAA tourneys and 8 straight years run in post season . But again, not relevant to the comparison above. Out of fairness WSU had 4 NCAA appearences in the 80's, part of a 7 out of 10 years post season run themsleves. Anything before 82 and we weren't a D-1 program so comparisons are pointless. I've stuck to what is a fair comaparison, the entire length of time the 2 programs have been in the same league competing on equal footing. You can claim anything you want prior to that, but since then, you have been a lower level Valley program for the most part, while we have been an upper division one most years.

Drake will most certainly dive into the abyss next season. Its two returning all conference players will choke, it's transfer from UC Irvine will suddenly be unable to shoot threes or rebound and the new coach will be thrown out of a record number of MVC games at home an away. Drake is will definitely fall back into the cellar.

Enough is enough already. Your team wins or loses solely on what they do. Not one thing anyone else says or post has any bearing on that. I know you know that, and I know you do it just to be cute and ha ha funny. But it's not funny anymore, it's annoying.

Kind of like how touching a sign, ala Notre Dame football, before a game, or not washing your jock strap or wearing your high school shorts under your uniform, or performing the same routine on gamedays/before freethrows, at bats, etc.

how could SIU fans not relate to making the NCAA tourney? We actually won some games in it too...OMG! Yah, and it's been a long enough mourning period, I think it's safe to pile on Drake for getting beat by a 12 seed. Way to represent the valley! I assume that finally ended the talk about Drake being as good as SIU was the season before. Thank god, that was asinine.

Karma didn't take you to the dance. Your team's effort did. Your pathetic karma posturing had zero to do with it. If you think it did, I've got some prime real estate to sell you....."real cheap." First you might want to consult cleo, but she'll predict the same thing.

why the karma thing? I don't get it. It demeans the team you are supposed to be rooting for. Why do you see this as a good thing? It's diminishes what they actually accomplished. I know you mean it as a joke, but even then, it really is an insult rather than a showing of respect.

I guess I fail to see the humor in it. If I was the team, and saw that people were attributing their hard work and success to karma, I'd be pretty upset and disappointed in my fans, even if it is a joke.

It's not hard to see my link has been deemed inactive. I'm pretty sure I know how to post a link, but thanks for the interest in my signature. I admire your linking prowess. Teach me, nutsucker, teach meeee.

Don't tell me your one of those loser parents who spends the whole day online surfing, while neglecting your kid and letting them fend for themselves, and asking them to make you a sandwich and grab you a beer from the fridge..

I got tired of his stalker ways. It was sad and pathetic. I would post in a thread, and no more than 5 minutes later, there he was to post in it, not about the topic being discussed, but something about me. It go so distracting to the other posters on the board, I felt it was my obligation to put him on ignore.

I thought by doing that, the board had been a lot more tolerable lately, with us not going back and forth, at least I had hoped it was. However, I see he has found other SIU fans to try and engage. I'm sorry guys.

I wish I understood his hate for SIU, and it's fans, but I don't. The best thing you can do is place him on ignore. Eventually he will run out of people who will read his post, and that will be the end of it.

let me reassure you on something. I don't like either.

I have never been to a college baseball game, never will. I've never been to a college volley ball match, and never will until the girls start wearing bikinis or nothing at all.

I don't even watch professional baseball until september when the games count, and even then, it better be a damn good game to trump football season.

probably not. Just like I don't watch our softball team when they've been good, or our world record women's hammer thrower, or any other sport SIU has excelled in.

the only sporting events I have ever watched regarding SIU athletics since 1997 (year I was a freshman) are basketball and football. That's it.

I've never even been inside the baseball stadium. I don't even know what it looks like.

What happened? You had nothing to post about! Zero! My God, MVCtalk.com almost had as many posts as Valleytalk! I just checked, yep, mvctalk had ZERO!

I can't believe that since most of the recent "banter" has been isolated to this thread, that the other threads aren't teeming with original thoughts of the coming season, bold predictions of the future and "insider" scoops about what is happening at each Valley basketball program. This is what they wanted, so they got it. Instead of taking the ball and running, all we have gotten is is very light discussion regarding a poorly devised ESPN breakdown of "prestige" basketball programs. Is that original, copying and pasting a story from ESPN? What am I thinking, that is great stuff!

Yep, the "troublemakers" go away and this place turns into a ghost town. The fact of the matter is these people want the smack, they just don't want to be in the middle of it. Missouri State fans think it's great when I bust on Wichita State, but if I point my finger their way, oh my God! It's killing the board! The same can go with the posters from all the other schools. Well, except Evansville, they pretty much just take it.

The fact of the matter is this, the "troublemakers" trash talk each other, but at the same time, also bring fresh ideas to the board. And whether or not the do gooders want to admit it, they all read it. You can watch a thread that contains a recent post from iSASO, Dawgie, me or any of the other "problems" and shortly after it is posted, there is a spike in views to that thread, I've watched the statistics. So they can say they hate it all they want, but it's just like the Jim Rome Show, lots of people say they can't stand him and don't listen, but ratings prove otherwise.

He isn't having fun, he seriously dislikes me and frankly the way he goes about it from thread to thread, post to post, etc. etc. is a little disturbing.

Short and Sweet.......WSU is now post-abyss, per outpost.

outpost is sure that many non-outpost posters will try to shout down outpost over outpost's beliefs.......but outpost has thought about this at length.......and although outpost respects the views and posts of many non-outpost posters out here on VT, outpost will stick by outpost's beliefs.

Put that on your bikes and ride them around for awhile.

I can't believe that since most of the recent "banter" has been isolated to this thread, that the other threads aren't teeming with original thoughts of the coming season, bold predictions of the future and "insider" scoops about what is happening at each Valley basketball program.

How about this "insider" scoop?
The July 21, 2008 Daily Show was awesome. http://www.thedailyshow.com/ Wyatt Cenac has resolved all of the racial issues in America and John McCain has taught us geography http://www.thecarpetbaggerreport.com/archives/16270.html (also http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/07/22/1213832.aspx).

Ya.. lots of 'hatered'.

If you're going to throw out the spelling cop thing, I should point out that in your post it should be "wring your neck", not "ring your neck".

But, you are a wise man....never jump through a computer when there might be a light saber waiting for you at the other end. That was good stuff.

Post #3......outpost just doing outpost's part. outpost has been a little busy lately.....but along the lines of posting, outpost would like to declare - in this very original post of outpost - that outpost believes that WSU is now emerging from any so-called abyss that many non-outpost posters have posted lately.

Weak.

It all depends on the context, monkey man.

So's your mom.....according to Dawgie. DS said that she was an easy pin on the mat.
