And here I thought we weren't going to give the scholarship vacated by Tyrone Cole-Scott to anybody this year, Bradley picks up a guy who didn't play anywhere this past year:

Kind of a flyer signing. Maybe this kid pans out or is a depth/practice player. Unless they saw something they really liked Bradley was probably better off holding onto the schollie for a year.

I like the sign by Bradley to get a 4 year 6'7 kid that is an athlete. I also love that his dad played NBA ball. Bradley loses 4 "post" players next year in 6'9 Sam Singh, 7'0 David Collins, 6'8 Rashard Austin, and 6'6 Theron WIlson. It's tough to replace that many big men in one year's class, especially at a mid major. We'll see what happens, but at this point, I'll take the kid to get another 4 year player in the mix so we don't have to get another Juco next year.

Note that Iowa State offered too . . . so some bigs were starting to take notice. Sounds like a decent get this late in the game.

Iowa state is a BSINO (Big School in Name Only), but it's better than having the other school being Maryland Eastern Shore

I don't think he will redshirt. His dad took him out of school last year to home school him, and to train him himself. Apparently the kid then grew an inch and 10 pounds. I don't see how being trained by a former NBA center could be a bad thing for the kid, and he might be a pleasant surprise at BU.

Very unusual, but interesting signing. Sounds like a guy who will either be a complete bust or be an impact player.

Incidently, when did Iowa State become a "big boy"?

it does kinda bother me that the kid was being taken out of competitive basketball.

style...he got some D1 offers out of HS but dad thought he could do better and enrolled him in JUCO. He got hurt before ever playing so he red shirted and he went home to dads driveway hoops 101.

He peaked some interest and went to some camps for HS and Juco's where some eyes were opened and JL and McNugget (ISU) offered quickly as a few high mids and low majors were poking around.

JL showed him the virtual tour of BU's new digs...a tape of the BU/MSU game at the PCC and threw him some cash:lol: and bingo......

The scholie was sitting empty......IF we save it its a 5 man class the following year...thats alot to lose 4 years later.

Perhaps not a big boy in the sense of Illinois, Kansas or Duke but certainly a bigger recruiting and overall athletic budget then probably anyone in the Valley.

Hard to say...can you redshirt Juco AND D1 ? ..

Hard to say...can you redshirt Juco AND D1 ? ..

The article says he has four years of eligibility left. He started at a JUCO, but left before the season started. I guess that means he didn't burn a year of eligibility. Seemed like you had a lot of depth in front of him this year so it might be wise to redshirt him and give him a year to mature more and learn the system. He could end up being a nice pick up.

So Taylor Brown enrolled at Bevill State (Ala.) Community College out of high school. He was injured last fall before the team’s season began and decided to return home.

"I decided to redshirt him and train him here at home," said the elder Brown. "I know talent when I see it, and he’s made a tremendous turnaround from last year to this year (adding an inch and 10 pounds). He has nothing but upside. He reminds me of a Scottie Pippen type who plays more like a (power forward) — a slasher who rebounds and blocks shots well."

You guys might know the rules better than me, but I think his five year clock started this past year when he started junior college classes. I think a redshirt is out of the question. Plus, I doubt a kid that didn't play at all last year would want to sit out another year, even if it might benefit him down the road.

BU's Rashad Austin just left due to homesickness......BU now has another scholie and less frontcourt depth.

Wow, that seems pretty unexpected. The timing is also pretty strange.

With two new developments in the last few days, there is certainly much more July action at Bradley then at the other MVC schools.

Could be a diamond in the rough. It sounds like he comes from a solid family and he is interested in academics. He may be a solid pickup for BU.

BU fans were lookn forward to a "quiet" season. I guess thats just not to be expected most ANYWHERE in this day and age off college hoops. Its why I don't cast stones towards other programs as it happens everywhere.

RA's departure doesn't rate to high on the "what the ****" meter. He came late to BU...never really found his groove thing and decided to go home. All parties seem to be OK with it. At least all parties are saying the right things.....

BU fans are hoping Brandon McGee is now a possibilty. He is a transfer from IU that was sceduled to visit sometime.

Good luck Rashad.

I was actually expecting this Austin news. . . I think a lot of BU fans were. I even thought it might happen earlier. Around half way through last season, it was becoming clear that he was in the JL doghouse, a place it seems very difficult to climb back out of.

Too bad about Rashad A.. What's Jim Less to do?
For what it's worth, every single one of Drake's top 6/7 this year was people who were fully at Drake for 3-4 years last year. May or may not be just a magical confluence, but it is surely what the Valley can strive for, relative to the Illini or Indiana (geez!) or Nebraska, or Iowa, or Iowa State, or whoever ........ to build a program in the Valley ya gotta keep the guys around for 4 years. I don't see Jim Les doin' it, which I kinda enjoy. :) Will he ever learn? Kinda hope he doesn't, actually. Has anybody else learned it?
For what it's worth .... any bets on whether Theron, etc., will stay eligible / healthy the whole coming year?

Why wouldn't they stay eligible? You've got to look at JL's history here. Where would BU be if it hadn't been for Sommerville, Wright, Franklin, Andrews? No Sweet 16 in the recent past, that's for sure. And I doubt it's gonna be a whole lot of fun facing Theron this season, either.

Note that Les is now building the program around 4-year guys: Warren, Maniscalco, Norris and McCain (this year's frosh point recruits), Egolf, Thompson, Knezivic, Taylor Brown. The jucos in the mix are all quality guys, especially Sean Harris . . . he could be a ton in the Valley when he arrives. And from what we're hearing about Dodie Dunson and Chris Roberts, seems like most BU fans will be glad JL doesn't slam the door on juco talent.

But the program is hardly built around jucos at this point. At least that's one guy's opinion. If there's one thing about Jim Les I'll never complain about, it's his recruiting.

Well said, brocks. May be a time, probably including 09-10, when Drake may need to go JC on some stuff. Hard to tell yet what Phelps will do.
Just hope everybody in the Valley can get the guys who can play and are not total mess-ups. Hard to expect that Drake's deal last year with long-term guys who could play and stayed eligible the whole time can be repeated very often. It was special.

p.s. Just for fun ... I'm still not over the Les-Hawkins full-court pass/shot to win at Drake back in the 80s. That was the last year, before 2007-8 that Drake was above .500. We have to have long memories at Drake.

I was expecting Austin to contribute a little bit to this upcoming season. I thought he would be second or third off the bench. I think one of the problems with the Braves over the last decade has been their lack of depth and this won't help.

I don't think any coach wants to recruit jucos first. There's no denying that Bradley had too many last year because some other players fell through for various reasons. However, Jim Les has had many successful juco players including most of the team that went to the sweet 16.

JUCOs should be a stop gap, not the foundation. Creighton has had a few good ones in the past year or so also.

WSU had a couple of Jucos last year. Ramon Clemente (Paris [Texas] JC) finished third in the Valley in rebounding. Mantas Griskenas (Three Rivers CC) was injured and only played in 18 games.

Ramon looks like a team leader this year and hopefully Mantas will be healthy. Clevin Hannah (Paris JC, Marianna (FL) Chipola JC) and Reggie Chamberlain (Seward County C.C.) will be guards for WSU next year. Our "juco" classes will be:
Soph: Chamberlain
Jr: Hannah
Sr: Clemente, Griskenas
You (hopefully) saw Clemente & Griskenas last year. Some information about Hannah & Chamberlain is:

Although I don't subscribe to it anymore, I've been able to figure out that Hoopscoops really likes Clevin Hannah. They grade out JUCO players in the same group as High School players in their rankings for best recruiting classes.

They gave Hannah a 4, which puts him in the top 76-100 players. Bobby Hill, a JUCO player coming into the MVC next year for Illinois State received the same grade. In Hoopscoops' eyes, they are the best new MVC players next year, along with Creighton's Anotoine Young.

Booker for SIU received a 3 grade which puts him in the top 101 to 300. He's been in Scouts' and Rivals' top 100 since having a good AAU season last Summer. However his high school season was a disappointment. Other WSU recruits receiving a 3 grade from Hoopscoops were Reggie Chamberlain and David Klyes. Stutz and Murry received a grade of 2 which places them in the top 301 to I think 600. Scout really likes Murry and I have no doubt that they consider him in the top 300. I'm sure Stutz is is considered in the top 250 to 350 by almost everybody.

Hoopscoops has SIU's recruiting class ranked #47 and WSU's at #57 to top the Valley recruiting classes this year. Every ranking of this year's recruiting classes I've seen has SIU ranked best in the Valley with WSU closely behind.

Three Seward County Basketball Players Sign with NCAA Division I Programs

LIBERAL, Kansas (April 16, 2008) - Seward County Community College men's basketball players Darko Cohadarevic, Bryson Hampton and Reggie Chamberlain signed their official NCAA letters of intent on Wednesday afternoon, which marked national signing day for NCAA basketball programs. Cohadarevic signed with Texas Tech University, Hampton signed with the University of California - Riverside, and Chamberlain signed with Wichita State University. All three SCCC basketball players held a press conference in the All-American on the campus of SCCC to announce their official decisions on where they would continue their academic and basketball playing careers. The Seward County men's basketball program has now had 47 players in their program sign with a NCAA Division I program, including 10 players over the last three years.

The two sophomores and freshman point guard led the Saints to a 32-6 overall record this past season while picking up Jayhawk West and Region VI Tournament championships along the way. Seward County finished its season winning the third-place game at the NJCAA Tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., with an 81-63 victory over Three Rivers Community College.

Chamberlain, the Jayhawk West Freshman of the Year, completed a stellar season with the Saints averaging 14.5 points and 4.6 assists per game. He was a First Team All-Conference selection, and he was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Region VI and NJCAA Tournament.

A 2007 high school graduate of Raytown H.S. in Kansas City, Mo., Chamberlain started for the Saints in 37 games this past season where he scored in double figures 25 times, led the team in scoring 13 times and was the team's leader in assists on 24 occasions. He ranked 14th in the nation in total steals (95), and 17th in free throws made (155).

Chamberlain will join the Wichita State men's basketball program that is now led by first-year head coach Gregg Marshall. In Marshall's first season with the Shocker's he led them to an 11-20 overall record and to a ninth-place finish in the Valley with a 4-14 league record. Marshall came to WSU after guiding the Winthrop program to seven NCAA Tournament appearances in nine seasons.

In his only season at SCCC, Chamberlain cracked six all-time Seward County single-season top 10 record books including free throws (9th, 155), 3-pointers (5th, 83), assists (6th, 171), steals (4th, 95), free throw shooting percentage (3rd, .833) and 3-point shooting percentage (9th, .426).

Exactly. It's a real crapshoot with JC guys.
As to Drake, for example .... Lewis Lloyd was a fantastic basketball player. Off the court, ehhh. Somebody like that wouldn't be at Drake these days.

p.s. I also still think like every day about the Emmenecker and Cox Magical Ending in Peoria, 2008. :)

Hoopscoops is kinda sucky. The list you want to go with if you are being objective is this one: http://home.nc.rr.com/rsci/RSCI_100_Fall_2008.htm

Booker's high school season wasn't what I would call disappointing. His team made it back to the state championship game and he had 23 points and 18 rebounds in the game. He had 16 points and 17 rebounds in the previous game. He just happened to be on a team with two other D1 kids and wasn't the focus of the offense. I think we're going to be happy he's a Saluki.
