On a more serious note, if Prop 48 players are eligible for FOY then my homer pick is that Bocot wins it. Dillard is playing behind Mullins, makes it hard to win the award. POY in 2009-2010, maybe.:lol:

Orupke, Stutz, Kyles, or Murray.
In any order.

As an Aces fan, I must nominate Kaylon Williams. He will be a solid player this year....minutes may be a limiting factor however since Holsinger and Lacey are experienced and will play a lot of minutes.
Haarsma may play a solid role with the Aces this year. He is a year older than the average Freshman since he played a year at a Prep School. I expect him to get playing time at the 3 (behind Ely) and 4 (behind Garner/Hopf)spots this season.

I would not be surprised to see Dillard starting before season is over, WITH Bryan Mullins.

I'd go with the best rated recruit in Booker....duh.
Dillard won't get enough PT, and Bocut is a prop 48 (not a true freshman).
That said, I don't think there is a freshman award, only a new comer of the year award, in which case Bocut would be eligible.
So if we are basing this only "Real" awards. Bocut is my NOY choice. If we are strictly talking true freshman...Booker.
It's not that Wichita's recruits don't deserve mention, they do. But it's hard to pick award winners from a team that doesn't look to be very competitive this year (the following years - different story).

So, Dawgie, the rules are this for basketball:
POY can only come from the 1st place team and FOY can only come from a Top 3 team.
In baseball, no award can go to the first place team.

The MVC awards both Newcomer of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards. P'Allen Stinnett won them both last year--

Then I go with:
FOY = Dillard/Booker
NOY = Bocot
POY = Mullins

I would have made the same guesses as you have for who I thought would have an impact. I was fairly high on Williams when UE was recruiting him. Denver Holmes and CJ Erickson are the guys who have been playing the best in the summer practice season thus far. I view this as a good thing seeing as how those guys are in line for a bit more playing time than Williams. I think Williams is going to struggle as a freshman adapting to the speed of college ball, especially as a freshman point guard. As you said, he will struggle to find minutes in the rotation.

So we should just base our FOY pick like rivals & scout rate them? No logic only less stars if they sign with a "Mid-Major"? Let's play it out first!

Only one freshman on Drake's roster....and it's 99.99% that he's going to redshirt. No FOY candidate for DU. If I had to pick a NOY from Drake, it would be Adam Templeton, transfer from Cal-Irvine. 6-6, great shooter, can put the ball on the floor and can post up. Probably the most impressive Drake player in the summer league out here (Young and Cox didn't play).

His main issues that scared teams away while he was in high school were grades and work ethic. If Martin can stay on him the entire season I think he is an MVC caliber player. The key will be if Martin is that type of coach. Often times guys who are lead recruiters tend to be much more friendly with players, relying on the head coach to provide most of the hard discipline. I think McFarland's success will depend more on Martin's transition to the head coaching position than anything else.

While I love both of the Omaha boys entering the Bluejay progam this fall, I can't see them getting enough PT to win FOY awards. Its not that they can't play, but there are just too many really talented guys in front of them. Personally, I hope that Antoine Young redshirts so that he can be the other PG (backing up Witter) next year after Dotzler graduates.
Justin Carter, the Juco transfer from Cali, may have a chance at NOY if he is as physical as Dana said after he signed. He could be the starting 3 by the end of the year...

Josh Jones for FOY but looking at the Jays for this season I would have to say that Justin Carter for NOY would be a better fit.
Josh Jones and Antoine Young will get the backup minutes...Jones will backup P and/or Carter...Young will back up Witter/Dotzler...at least when the mid-season lineups take shape.

If Josh Jones is the backup to P'Allen and Carter, exactly when do you propose that Woodfox will see the floor? I don't see Dana keeping Booker's sweet 3 pt shot off the floor for very long...
I agree re: Young, but question how many minutes are going to be left after Witter and Dotzler...

Coach Martin is a no nonsense all business type of guy who has already told one incoming recruit who didn't play hard at a summer league game that he would be "gone" if it happened again. All the players have said things are totally different now and off season workouts are MUCH harder compared to previous years...much more of a business approach
Having watched McFarland several times in pick up games there isn't any doubt he is the most talented guard we have but he needs to be more aggressive and look to score more. He has a chance to be very good if he does that and he will play big minutes from day one.

Isn't this said in any program that has a coaching change. You even heard it after CU hired the Arkansas coach.

Having attended hundreds of practices while Barry was the coach I honestly never thought we practiced hard enough. It was one of the reasons I always thought some of our teams under Barry were soft and not very mentally tough at times. I have watched some workouts this summer and they are night and day...plus I have talked to all of the players everyone of them has talked about how much harder workouts are.
Yes, whenever there is a coaching change things will obviously be "different" but in our case we have left the country club workouts behind.

I agree that Jones will back up P and Woodfox.
Booker/Cavel/P/Carter/Dotzler/Harriman will be the "front line" of the guards (1-3, small 4s) interchange them how you wish, and then Jones and Young (at least next season) will get the mop-up minutes, or if a special matchup presents itself...or who knows, they make some great strides and prove to worthy to snag more minutes...and put some pressure on the guys ahead of them (seniority wise) to work that much harder for their spot.
I guess my point was that CU's chances are probably greater to have the NOY (or how about POY) rather than the FOY.

I'm relatively confident that Coach Marshall's practices are (and will be) tougher for the players than under the previous regime.
Not having been to any of their practices or pickup games, I can't make a fair comparison of now vs. then (Turgeon's), nor do really care to.
I do know this.....individually, players seem to be pushing themselves pretty hard. Clemente passed out yesterday while running the stairs at the football stadium.
